BANGKOK, 15th December 2017. (NNT) During a recent “Thailand Today” program on NBT World TV, Director-General of Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Ms. Busadee Santipitaks, discussed the benefits of the EU's decision to resume political contact with Thailand.

She said that Thailand and the EU will resume their relationship in partnerships. Thailand will continue to pursue political contacts, economic interests, and investments which will offer mutual benefits and mutual interest.

Furthermore, the ASEAN – EU relations will deal with important issues such as Non-Traditional Security, transnational crimes, terrorism, cyber security et etcetera which will be beneficial for not only the government side but also the private sector and as well as stakeholders in our relationships.

Ms. Busadee anticipates that relations between the two sides will improve significantly a year from now, as Thailand moves forward with national reforms and its election road-map.

what really bothers me is that Thailand relies on exports to the EU and yet they tax everything heavily coming in from the EU, trade has to work both ways

"The Council looks forward to the progressive deepening of relations with Thailand following the holding of credible and inclusive elections and improvements in the human rights situation.  The EU looks to the Thai authorities to ensure a political environment in which opposition parties and civil society can function freely.

In the conclusions, the Council also invites the Commission to explore with Thailand the possibilities for resuming talks on an EU-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (FTA)."

One of the reasons for the EU's decision was the promise of the junta chief to hold elections in a specific, concrete time frame: 2018!
So it may increase the pressure on him to keep his word ...
Because what was resumed can be revoked as well, connected with the international attention such a step normally causes.

Nothing concrete about elections in 2018 there. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Need there be after Prayut has stated in writing with US President Trump that elections will be in 2018?

EU may just be "piggy-backing" off that promise.
