SOMCHAI “KAMNAN Poh” Khunpluem has been released from prison as a special case due to the severity of his illness, Corrections Department chief Pol Colonel Narat Sawettanan said yesterday. Somchai, 80, was eligible to receive the suspension as he has stage four cancer and is over 70 years old, Narat said.

The special suspension of a sentence is granted to convicts with serious medical conditions to allow them to have appropriate medical treatment and return home to spend the rest of their lives with their families, Narat said.

The order to release him was approved by Justice Minister ACM Prajin Juntong on Thursday. The department sent the letter of release to Police General Hospital where Somchai was being detained.

Somchai was arrested in Bangkok’s Pattanakarn area in January, 2013, after years on the run following corruption and murder convictions. He was sentenced to a jail term of 25 years on the murder case and five years and four months on the corruption case. He was jailed at Bangkok Remand Prison and transferred to Medical Correctional Hospital in the first night of his detention due to his illness. Four days later he was transferred to Chon Buri Prison.

The cynic in me is predicting a miraculous recovery.

He's out of hospital, with stage four cancer, not long now, so may he rest in peace., .

And going back to his old job, being a mafia boss.. it's so trasparant

that's is bordering on an insults to the Thai people intelligent capacity

where's apply....

A disgusting example of a human.....let's see if miracles can happen for his recovery......I hope not!

Remarkably dark hair for an 80 yr old, must have a stress free life.

He should die in prison, either in the execution chamber or of cancer.

Why is this report incomplete?

If I remember correctly, he immediately after arriving at Chonburi Prison was transferred to Chonburi Hospital (i.e. a facility OUTSIDE the prison), where he has ever since occupied a rather posh room, though under guard. So as far as I can judge, this disgusting man has not spent any time in prison for his crimes. In effect, the only punishment he has received was being confined to a room equipped with all modern comforts.

Par for the course here. It will have cost him a lot of money if that is any consolation.

So says the OP.

Must admit I was under the impression that he spent more time in the hospital than he did in a cell.

Let him do a max Clifford.

In 1989, I was enjoying Karaoke with Somchai Khunpleum and the then Police Chief. I was hosted by a friend from Pattaya, who later became a Senator in the Thai Government. There have been a lot of stories about Somchai fleeing Thailand to stay at a Casino in Cambodia. When he was a arrested in 2013 in Bangkok due to a urgent hospital visit, I asked my friend about the stories that he was out of the country. He told me that he was normally staying at the family home in Chonburi. As I recall, the Bangkok Police told him to go back to his home in Pattaya and that he would be arrested only if he came back to Bangkok and as far as I understand that is still the case. He is not under arrest and the guards outside his hospital room are most likely there to protect him, not to prevent him escaping.

And then....he stabilized....

Yes, "four days later he was transferred to Chonburi Prison" FROM BANGKOK's Medical Correctional Hospital. But after arrival there (i.e. at Chonburi Prison), he was almost immediately taken to Chonburi Hospital, where he has stayed ever since in a luxuriously appointed single room. He did NOT have to go back to Chonburi Prison but lived in relative comfort at a civilian hospital outside the prison walls. That is at least how it has been reported by local newspapers if I remember it correctly.

This man is 'famous' in Thailand and has huge connections . I remember when his son got married in BangSaen (near Pattaya).  Most people of wealth will rent out a hotel- Somchai rented the whole city of BangSaen for the thousands of guests that were invited.

Sure his son made enough to help him out a little with day to day finances :)
