Extension of 30 day visa exempt entry

Featured Replies

My friend who has been to Thailand a few times before entered on a 30 day visa exempt entry expiring Jan4. He now wishes to extend this at immigration for a further days so that he can fly back to UK on Jan18 for two weeks before he comes again.

He has heard or been told that if he gets the 30 day extension he can't enter Thailand again for 60 days. I haven't heard of this but perhaps someone could confirm or debunk the advice given to him.

Many thanks

never heard of that rule either but best wait for those more in the know to confirm

Never ever heard or read about that either

Many people get the visa exempt entry, extend it and repeat the process immediately.

You can only get a visa exempt entry twice during the calendar if you use a land border.

If you arrive by air there is theoretically no limit, but if you repeatedly do many back to back visa exempt entries you're likely to be questioned about the reason.

Your friend would have no problem doing a second visa exempt entry. Getting an extension of the first entry would make absolutely no difference.

How many is a few? Over what period of time and did he only use visa exempt entries?

If he is a tourist, why not get a tourist visa while at home?

There is no such rule.

Would it be easier to get a visa extension In Udon Thani or Bkk?

Apologies for not replying to a question. He has come in a few times since 2011 think always visa exempt but not a lot.

I had never heard of this being a problem but asked the question because I am not an expert and as always with immigration it's what you don't know that catches you out.

Thanks very much for your replies

I think you can only get a 7 day extension on a visa exempt entry.  I could be wrong, but I don't think so, best check as he may have to do a visa run..

you need to rethink that, all extensions on a visa exempt or a tourist visa are 30 days, unless married to a a Thai national and then its 60 days allowed

It was increased from 7 to 30 days a few years ago.

OK, it's a couple of years since I needed one.  Apologies to the OP for out-of-date info.

Absolutely, totally wrong.  This post is misinformational and should be deleted before it touches off a flurry of wasted response.  (It was never an "extension" in the first place, didn't have anything specific to do with visa exempt entries in the 2nd place, and really is essentially off-topic overall.)
