Kandal provincial police officers yesterday slaughtered nearly 100 fighting cocks seized during a raid on a cockfighting and gambling ring run by Thai Phany, the Prime Minister’s nephew-in-law. Roeun Nara, Kandal provincial deputy police chief, said that after receiving the order from the provincial court, the 92 cocks seized in the raid in Lvea Aem district earlier this month were killed.

 

“The animals were killed, and the meat was used to feed our forces,” Mr Nara said. Hok Vanthyna, director of the Kandal Provincial Court, signed the order on December 19, deciding keeping the cocks was too expensive, and they also could be used in future cockfighting rings.

 

The joint raid of the police and military forces which shut down Mr Phany’s illegal activities on December 4 also led to the arrest of nearly 100 people and the seizure of more than 50 cars and nearly 200 motorbikes. Of the arrested gamblers, 64 were immediately convicted to a one-month term in jail, but the sentence was suspended.
