PHUKET: After a week of warnings issued to vendors of alcohol across the island, the Phuket Public Health Office (PPHO), acting on orders from Bangkok, now say they have no choice but to start legal action against those who continue to break the law involving the illegal sale and promotion of alcohol ahead of the New Year celebrations.

The crackdown this week has already seen one Super Cheap store south of Phuket Town and the bars at the popular Chillva Market in Samkong stand to have any licences to sell alcohol revoked as they are located too close to schools. (See story here.)

The campaign will now extend across the island, and include the bars and nightlife venues on Bangla Rd, Patong, confirmed Dr Prapa Nakara, who as Director of the PPHO’s Non-communicable Diseases division directly heads the enforcement of alcohol-related regulations on the island.

Under the banner of protecting Thais from the sins of alcohol, it is forgotten that the  vast majority of people in Phuket are foreigners. Wr don't need to be subjected to the prissy, nanny state type of bullying by the health dept. It is getting way beyond funny,. If  you sissies don't want to drink alcohol, then don't ....its not forced on you. Get with the world !!!!!

Because foreigners drinking alcohol near schools is different than Thais? Maybe so, good for Thais to see at a young age just how gross and disgusting some Foreigners can be.

Surely those who don't drink alcohol are not "sissies"?? I thought that mindset went out yonks ago.

A storm in a middy glass.

Health official Natpimon Na Nakorn who works out of the Ministry of Health’s Office of Prevention and Control of Disease Region 11 office in Nakhon Sri Thammarat  (which also covers Phuket), pointed out that the operators were operating in flagrant disregard of the alcohol promotion laws.

Claiming to be under orders from Bangkok this lady has targeted bars in the popular Chillva Night market on the basis they are too close to a school, which, presumably, is closed at night.

She is particularly incensed at promotional balloons, happy hours, two-for one deals, staff known as "pretties", and any promotion of alcohol to encourage people to drink. (She reminds me somewhat of the former Tourist Lady Boss who was going to close down prostitution in Pattaya.)  Perhaps pickings are slim back in Nakhon Somewhere and she needs to exert her influence in the rich tourist Province of Phuket.

However, after she departs it falls upon the local plod to enforce these silly alcohol laws, no doubt in their own tried and tested way.  Palms will be greased by something other than a wet middy glass and life will go on as before.

Excellent. Shut them all down if they are in breach of the law. Amazing how TV drunkpats are happy to see other laws enforced, except for ones that cut into their boozy time. If you can't plan your drinking time ahead, bad luck.

As this was posted immediately after my post I presume your childish insults were directed at me.

FYI,   I rarely touch alcohol these days and haven't seen the inside of a bar for years.

When you decide to play Mr Morality and throw rubbish at people you don't know the only person you're insulting is yourself.

I, and I'm sure many others, now think of you as a hypocritical banker.
