PM to assign Transport Ministry to improve road system

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said on Saturday that he would assign the Transport Ministry to figure out how to improve road networks by creating web-like transport routes to avoid traffic congestions.

Prayut said heavy congestions often occurred during long holidays, like New Year holidays, because most vehicles used the main roads.

The prime minister said government agencies concerned must inform the people of alternative routes so that they could avoid the heavily congested main roads.

“The problem is that vehicles are meeting one another on all major roads. So, I would like the roads to be designed like a web that can be inter-connected,” Prayut said.

The prime minister said it has to be found out where the subsidiary and alternative routes should be built to supplement the main roads.

He said the government may build short roads as bypasses for heavily congested main roads.

He added that the Transport Ministry had already improved a lot of roads in the North to reduce road accidents at sharp curves during the past three years.

He forgot to mention check points delaying traffic almost anytime ! So glad he is Prime Minister always thinking ahead knows the problems and how to fix .....oh sorry got a bit carried away!

He just have to look outside his own garden ( Thailand ) He was in the States and for sure he saw the highways there and it's also to look around in Europe how highways are done there No U-turns, no traffic lights, all crossing traffic by viaducts  or underneath and longer entry and exit strips  just to name something. I hate short sighted people

Go fast in straight line , break hard, use 2 lanes to go around curve

yes I good driver ,

The skills shown every day on the roads are truly embarrassing, for supposedly intellegent people.

That was after both went to an Italian restaurant and had spaghetti. Then the Transport Minister said to Prayut" look the answer is in our food!

Sometimes solved in other developed nations with one-way traffic, no street parking during rush hours and limited access.

It's not rocket science!

But requires law enforcement discipline - therein the flaw.

Um, so how does this work, the Ministers are sitting around slack jawed mouth open kinda dopey looking wondering what their purpose in life is.

Then someone comes along and tells them it is in fact their duty to solve transport issues.

Unbelievable!

Google Maps does this.

All of them, surely not, I like Mr. Magoo

when will they wake up and realize that if they actually get the police doing their jobs out on the roads the deaths will go down, also actually spending the money allocated to build the roads instead of letting  a third or more be pocketed and then building cheap roads that fall apart in months to stop happening would also make a huge difference but just maybe that would remove too much from their pockets

How about he assign them to improve the RTP while they are it Can see lots of meeting Lots of drawings :Lots of suggestions and after while soon forgotten Money to be made having meetings The Deputy Pm gets 100,000 to attend each meeting but hardly shows but still gets paid Work that one out:partytime2:

He hasn't got a clue. Road works will not extend 60km past Bangkok?

Who supposes this?  Most Thai drivers have the intelligence of a buffalo.  They see no further than the front of their car; have no concept of braking distance; no spatial awareness;  oh and they drive drunk.

Prayut will end 2017 having talked the most complete and utter drivel. As for vehicles meeting each other on major roads, does he not understand the basic road network premise that the  purpose of major roads is to take most vehicular traffic from one region or city to another. Vehicles must meet on the major roads as any child would understand, if shown a simple map . . . the map of Thailand, maybe, with its principal cities all needing to be connected by major roads and motorways, taking traffic by the shortest feasible route from one centre to another. But Prayut is going to design and build a new network . . . like a web, he says. Will he do this before or after the now 7 planned rail projects?

That there are people actually listening to this drivel is a worry . . . they must have been paid to listen and not to say a word, whilst P1 tries yet another rouse to win a few more votes . . . next week, he'll be telling the world that he's Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman, all rolled into one.

I an Army general has decided he's an expert on traffic design and ready to promote a one-size fits all single "web" solution (not sure what that is but the streets surrounding the Eiffel Tower comes to mind) that would seem to actually exacerbate more traffic issues.

Prayut makes no suggestion in the article for a scientific approach for data collection to analyze current conditions, establish traffic goals and test for potential solutions. Note that all cities and other destinations are not equal in traffic characteristics or needs.

Before committing to a single traffic concept Prayut should task Transport minister to study for example:

  • capacity - traffic volume, frequency and weight.
  • connectivity - travel times. A "web" is likely to increase traffic "circuity" that will cause greater congestion through an expansion of closely-spaced traffic intersections.
  • closure - limiting or closing through traffic, eliminating two-way traffic
  • connecting modes - integration of vehicle traffic with mass transit
  • location - proximity of work place to residence and personal services. Prayut's commitment to build 10 additional bridges into Bangkok is not intuitive to reducing congestion.

A newcomer might have assumed, that it was already the job of the Transport Ministry to improve the roads, but TiT so they would clearly have been wrong, and they need to be assigned to do their proper jobs !

I'm sure that will immediately make all-the-difference, until this time next year, when the same instructions will be issued, regardless of who's in-power then.

Yes, all roads should interconnect. Then make more jobs for police to sit and watch new intersections. More public money spent on stupid ideas. The the way, how's the submarines working? Subvert any underwater foreign attacks on Phuket?
