As Edwarda B said แค่ would be the most commonly used word for only. coming from เพียงแค่ The word แค่ is more commonly used by itself. เดียว is also used and commonly used in the same sentence to highlight "only" อยากอยู่ที่บ้าน ดูทีวีเเค่อย่างเดียว So as you can see with the above sentence เเค่อย่างเดียว can be used together.(not always) In fact I would usually use เเค่ by itself. you could also use it without เเค่ อยากอยู่ที่บ้าน ดูทีวีอย่างเดียว เอง Is used as in soley more so than only (as you are probably know anyway Loong) It just adds the self to the end of my or you อยากทำการบ้านด้วยตัวเอง (เอง) is probably not a great one for only. เพียงแค่ or แค่เพียง is used aswell, but IMO as I do hear เพียง being used its usage is not at the same level as แค่ อยากกินเเค่ผักเพียงอย่างเดียว I hope this helps. I am not the best at explaining what I am thinking and usually end up confusing people more than they were when they started...
rak sa_ngop
--> QUOTE(Edward B @ 2007-01-19 08:22:09) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I only have 100 Bahtฉันมีเงินแค่ 100 บาท I only have a 100 Baht note ฉันมีแต่แบงค์ 100 ใบเดียว The above seem like good examples of the difference in use between แค่ and แต่ . How interchangeable are these two words. i.e. can I say ผมมีเเต่่ 100 บาท ้if I have 2x50 baht notes in my hand instead of 1x100 baht note. I only eat fish on Fridays (ie. I do not eat fish on any other day of the week) ฉันกินปลาในวันศุกรวันเดียว On Fridays I only eat fish (ie. On Fridays I eat nothing but fish) ทุกวันศุกร ฉันจะกินแต่ปลา The cost is only 100 Baht ราคาเพียงหนึงร้อยบาด I only have 100 Baht ฉันมีร้อยเดียว I only have enough money to buy one เงินที่ฉันมีอยู่ ซื้อได้แค่อันเดียว i wonder how many sets of these we can come up with? good practice! aanon
Seems to have gone quiet on here, so here i am following up on my own post. oops, am i hooked? As for the example sentences, if you are a beginner and want a do-it-all word, go with แค่: I only eat fish on Fridays (ie. I do not eat fish on any other day of the week) ฉันกินปลาแค่ในวันศุกร์ (literally: i eat fish only on fridays) On Fridays I only eat fish (ie. On Fridays I eat nothing but fish) วันศุกร์ฉันกินแค่ปลา The cost is only 100 Baht ราคาแค่ร้อยบาด I only have 100 Baht ฉันมีแค่ร้อยบาด I only have enough money to buy one ฉันมีเงินพอที่จะซื้อได้แค่อันเดียว (literally: i have money enough to buy only one) People will understand you, then over time you will get used to hearing other ways of saying 'only' and you'll start using them yourself. Any other examples of the use of "Only" in common speech would be much appreciated. another variation on only: มีแต่ลูกคนรวย(เท่านั้น) ที่ได้มีโอกาสเรียนเมืองนอก (only rich kids have a chance to study overseas).
