A 54-year-old Co Cork man who went missing in Thailand last week has been found in a hospital in Bangkok.

Anthony O’Sullivan from Mitchelstown went missing on January 18th.

His brother Martin has issued a statement via Facebook saying that Anthony has been found in hospital and the family will “know more when they see him.”

A search operation began when Mr O’Sullivan became uncontactable.

His passport and bank card were found in the bathroom of his hotel in Bangkok.

I guess the hotel hadn't informed immigration. I am sure the first thing the police did was check immigration records.

Isn't that the whole idea of us showing passports when we stay at hotels?

Anyway, really good to hear that he has been found alive.

Well I did say he would be found dead or alive as is often the case in Thailand.

Seems he was in the better half of the prediction.

Good news for sure. ??

Immi will surely gloss over the whole thing. As you say, all the reporting we are expected to do is supposedly to protect us... see where this got this guy? His family spent days worrying for his welfare.

They found the hotel he was staying at. His passport was there but he wasn't. If he's wandered out of the hotel with no ID then it's not that easy to trace him after that.

Yes, they found the hotel after searching for a week.
It doesn't say how they found the hotel, but could be because he hadn't paid.

Surely with all the registering we do with immigration they should have seen that he had registered at that hotel and at least narrow the search to that area.

I thought we knew early on the hotel he was staying at. Wasn't this the guy who's passport was found in the bathroom?

Having said that, I don't know if hospitals have to inform immigration when they have a foreign in-patient - are they subject to the same rule for requiring a TM30 to inform about a foreigner  "staying" at the premises?

After all, he's not staying free and is being charged for his stay.

Pretty sure you need your passport and proof of payment to be put into any hospital in Thailand, or that is what I have to do the past 13 yearshere.  How did he get in without it and why not send off to his hotel to get it???  This doesn't smell right.  Thank goodness he is alive though!!!!!

I'd think that would be normally requested, yes.

However, as he was ill, maybe that was ignored. As long as he signed the paperwork to confirm he would pay the bill, of course.

That isn't the fault of immigration, the hospital is legaly bound to inform the tourist police in such cases (dead tourist or sick tourist whose identity isn't known etc.) they often aren't aware and don't do this.

Great news

It's not clear to me if the Police were responsible for locating him, I would have thought had the Police found him the usual crowded photo op would be at the top of the story.

It would seem in spite of the information provided by travellers the electronic system to correlate and access this data is a little slow.

Don't forget the GPS tracking that was previously mooted

Good that they found him. Heeeelp! Can somebody push the smart button please!

They heve created a system where all foreigners that stays in Thailand get resitered by the hotel they stay in. Why just not make the system include hospitals too?
Then they will surely know better and get the information on record. Half of all missing people are found directly.

Problem solved in 2 seconds! Please call me for the next one you can´t solve!

Strange that when you think about the money factor, which wont be something to be sniffed at if he has been there a few days

If you have a copy on your phone that can be emailed to the hospital, they will accept that in my experience.

And it is a probably a good idea to be conscious and be able to identify yourself, your hotel and sign papers.

It would be quite difficult for an emergency admission, in a coma (which he may have been) to do that.

I was chastised last week for being heartless for suggesting people search the bars first for missing Irishmen, I was also called a "knob" (agreed). And now we find out that in fact he is in hospital having his Jamesons administered intravenously.

What's Jamesons?

What's bars got to do with hospital?

Good to hear about the Happy Ending.  :spam1:

It's an Irish whiskey, not quite Bushmills  but good for you none the less

to be honest the police and hospitals would be the first places to check, so it's surprising it took so long to track him down.

glad he's ok.

Years ago the police or their agents would do the rounds of hotels and guest houses and pick up the registration forms, this trip the two guest houses I have stayed in took photos of my passport and visa and photos of a lady friend's ID card,do they send it to a immigration centre or local police or what?

When found, if not dead or alive, what condition would he be?

We're getting a bit pedantic now.

If he was found to be in a permanent vegetative state, would that consider him brain dead, but being kept alive?

Just trying to answer your question.

....is always the case.  There's no in-between in this life.

Thanks for letting us know he is OK
