BANGKOK — The junta has ordered seven of the most prominent pro-democracy activists be charged with crimes including sedition after they launched a protest campaign calling for general elections to be held in November.

Col. Burin Thongprapai, acting on behalf of the military junta, filed police complaints Tuesday morning at Bangkok’s Pathumwan Police Station against the seven well-known activists.

Running scared..............:whistling:

This is how you get international attention.

Why bother, considering there will be an election next February? It makes it look like you have no intention of ever going to the polls if you don't leave them be. What are you so worried about?

" charged with crimes including sedition"

that sounds more than a bit harsh, the

powers that be, don't want anyone talking

about the current situation ,what's next the

thought police*             *1984

"On Monday, an aide to junta deputy Prawit Wongsuwan, said the pro-democracy campaign was orchestrated by foreign powers."

The usual obvious comment made since decades by any autocratic government in the world.....

Let me get this straight. The military Junta who came to power in a coup are charging people who are asking for an election with sedition?

This does not auger well for the promised return to democracy.

I think they are quite afraid of them because they cannot use the usual boggeyman argument against them, and they may well be able to attract part of the Bangkok middle class.

You missed a very important phrase before democracy. Thai style. It is unique and unbeknown to anyone who isn't Thai.

So this is democracy Thai style ?

and now they have a boggeywoman in London as well

One wonders if you can actually be rebellious going against a group that took over your country by force. Some would say patriotic resistance, but of course I would never say that.

Seven DRG activists summoned to acknowledge charges for illegal public gathering

By Thai PBS

Seven activists who gathered at the Pathumwan intersection skywalk on January 27 to protest against the 90-day postponement of next election have been summoned by the police to acknowledge the charges against them.

Last week, the National Legislative Assembly overwhelmingly passed the final reading of an amendment to the election bill of Members of the Parliament whichwill make the bill enforcible 90 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette. This will automatically put off the next election by 90 days.

Pol Gen Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul, the deputy national police chief, said today that the legal team of the National Council for Peace and Order had lodged a complaint with the police accusing the seven members of the so-called Democratic Rehabilitation Group of defying the NCPO Order Number 3 and Assembly Act by gathering in public of more than five people without prior permission.

"On Monday, an aide to junta deputy Prawit Wongsuwan, said the pro-democracy campaign was orchestrated by foreign powers. Paisal Puechmongkol said on his self-maintained fan page that they the result of “trickery by foreign powers” as in Iran and Hong Kong. He posted his comments along with a photo of an actor portraying an ancient Chinese military strategist."

Maybe if I just make stuff up, things will get better.

Not even a shred of evidence to support his wilder than wild claim.   Wonder what sort of medication he is taking.

Isn't their campaign the junta's campaign too.  What is a democratic soldier without a democracy ?  Or perhaps the good general was just talking like this fellow.

An off topic post and answers have been removed.

The junta really put their foot in it this time....may they regret it...

And unbeknown to any Thai I have spoken to.

This junta is really, really foolish: they are doing everything possible now to store up massive problems for themselves in the future. If you keep on goading and prodding a sleeping bull, it will eventually rise up and fight back. This junta mob have not got the brains of a peanut. They are idiocy incarnate. They are now BEGGING for large-scale trouble ...

It's now become "sedition" in Thailand to call for promised democratic elections???

That's a rather peculiar legal interpretation by those in charge...

So being 'pro democracy' makes one a rebel, seditioner, and probably a high traitor that needs to be punished while being pro 'junta democracy' makes you a well nurtured and brainwashed useful citizen.

Solon, Kleisthenes, Gandhi, Danton, Che Guevara, and many others turn in their graves.

Thai Democracy; hold an election where the voters cannot win a majority?

Edited by alant

Does General Prayut make the call for these charges to be laid or does it come from further up in the ruling elite circles?

Must be fake news. Well I was hoping.

Gee, what's next...firing squad?
