Bangkok’s Min Buri Provincial Court on Wednesday sentenced Thai folk singer Prayong “Yingyong Yodbuangam” Buangam and two others to 20 years in jail each without suspension over a fraud case linked to farm products.

The verdict came in the public fraud lawsuit filed by Jiraporn Suwankrua and 12 co-plaintiffs against Thaenkhun Phaendi Siam Co; Prayong, 55, who served as the firm’s executive and shareholder; and 13 others at the company.

The court ordered four other defendants to each pay fines worth Bt130,000. It acquitted five others and the prosecutor had previously dropped charges against three defendants.

Yingyong was famous for his many folk albums, especially the song “Somsri 1992”, and made appearances in films and televised dramas.

He was born into a poor farming family, studied as a Buddhist novice until completing Mathayom 3 and the left for a labouring job in Bangkok until his singing talent made him a star.

He won praise for his aspiration to gain an education, and he finally obtained a bachelor degree from Bangkokthonburi University at the age of 53. He authored a biography with a title that translates as “Yingyong: standing strong as a man against the waves of life”.

He also went into the world of business, serving as an executive and shareholder of Thaenkhun Phaendi Siam Co, established in 2011.

It's surprising he got 20 years when people routinely get 10 year sentences for murder if they admit it.

Maybe he didn't bow and scrape enough before the judges.

Well, well, the waves of life ...

Ripping off dirt poor farmers is obviously viewed as a serious crime....

But then,  businessmen that sell them fake fertilisers walk??

They should give him another 20 years for the noise he tries passing off as music

He can write a song for all those victims of the 1 year imprisonment for smoking he meets in there.

Double the bird of a ecig seller must be serious .

He will be singing another tune now!  Jail house rock :passifier:

Yingyong will now be taking it in the ying yang.
