File photo : Premchai's tusks

Police are in the process of determining the origins of two pairs of tusks confiscated from the house of Premchai Karnasuta, the construction mogul who was charged with poaching in a Kanchanaburi wildlife sanctuary, deputy national police chief Pol General Srivara Rangsibharmanakul said on Thursday.

An initial inspection of the tusks indicated that they did not come from Thai or Asian elephants, he said.

The ivory as well as dozens of rifles were confiscated from Premchai’s Bangkok houses after he was arrested for allegedly poaching in Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary early on Monday.

Found at his campsite erected in an off-limits area were the carcasses of protected wild animals, including a black Indochinese leopard, a barking deer and a pheasant as well as several hunting rifles.

Srivara said on Wednesday after the search that Premchai had a permit to own the tusks as required by law.

However, Srivara said on Thursday investigators were checking whether the permit was actually for the tusks in question.

“If the items do not match the permit, he will be charged,” he said.

On the surface the charging of top mogul Premchai is amazing. Not only for poaching but now being investigated because of having (possibly African) elephant tusks.

With the amount of huge government contracts his company has been awarded he must be one of the best connected people in the land.- so 'how come' I believe it will eventually die into oblivion but in the meantime what a windfall for General Prayut who probably gave the investigation his full backing as now he will be hoping that the furore over his 'brother's' watches will be forgotten in the new limelight..

"Police investigate origin of mogul’s elephant tusks"

Following months of exhaustive detective work, the police will announce that they came from some elephants.

I wonder why police was so quick performing a house search in this case but in the toad's case they never did. That should have been done at the latest after the third watch was "detected".

Who does not smell a rat in this case, something is going on? Not enough watches or maybe too many watches to the wrong person

Give us a clue......do you think Permchai loaned Prawit some of his watches?

Or did Prawit loan Permchai some tusks?    Very confusing, but Permchai is in hot water now, just like the leopards tail,. unlike Prawit, who is in the clear I'd say, ready to defend the nation.

I have no problem with a fat old politician and  a few watches....but this guy...I want to throw darts at him all day long.. wait!!!!.....well we can fry him in oil and feed him to the gators

No need for the oil, the guy has  his his own oil supply round his toxic waist.

... and the elephants loaned their tusks to him just before they died.

I am sure they can get some DNA from the tusks and there are plenty of international NGO's who would be more than willing to investigate where they came from.

poachers are the predetors of the forest and should be dealt with as such.....

We will probably soon be informed he borrowed the tusks from a friend who died on a recent elephant hunting safari.
