New Honda? New Toyota? Mazda?

Featured Replies

I've been riding a motorbike here in Thailand for the last four years but a move to another province has me looking to buy a new car. I'm a big hatchback person as I like the practicality but I could go with crossover if it checks most of the boxes. Multi Camera view is such a great feature it's a must have. I prefer Hybrid over regular petrol but I can be talked out of it. EV is almost out of the question.

  1. The Honda City Hatchback RS intrigues me. Turbo, a ton of safety features, Hybrid, magic seats, etc.

  2. BYD makes a cool electric hatch but still no word if it will come to Thailand. I'm not going to wait.

3. I looked at Toyota Corolla Cross, it just doesn't seem right for me.

4. Yaris Cross is a possibility. Yaris is not.

5. They sell Honda HR-V Hybrid's here in Thailand, it's got to be considered.

6. People swear by Mazda 3 and they do sell it in a hatchback/fastback and they look like a work of art.

Maybe there's a car/hatch/crossover/small van I'm not thinking of?

Why are you ruling out EV’s?

I would never buy another ICEV.

EV are less expensive, perform better and 3 brands come with lifetime warranty on the 3 most importand components: battery, controller, motor (s)

Test drive one before buying an ICEV.

As of the end of December 2025 I could not agree with Khun LA more. We were going to buy a new Nissan X Trail Hybrid to replace the 5 year old one we had. But started looking at maintenance, looking back it is expensive at all service times with a hybrid as you are dealing with 2 engines. Finally started looking at EV's at the big motor show. Liked the Deepal S07L and kept bargaining. In the end we picked one up and have been so happy. All the perks Khun LA mentioned were included. In addition a year of insurance and a very high class wrap as well. So much better than the previous hybrid from Nissan.

At least have a look and if there is a car show go. We go one heck of a deal on the very last day of the show!!

He considered the BYD, did you miss that?

They do seem to be quite the bargain. I would certainly consider an EV were I in the market.

Hybrid would be my last choice.

Most people don't know oil degrades with heat and regardless of mileage lasts a MAXIMUM of 6 months.

If you're not changing the oil MORE OFTEN than every 6 months in Thailand, you're wearing out the engine unnecessarily.

You can ruin any of your choices by not changing the oil properly.

You'd be surprised at the number of stupid people who cheap out on oil changes to "save" money, even in places like Silicon Valley California full of supposedly smart people. 😋

All good vehicles and can’t really go wrong with any of them. Though personally they’re all too small and now drive a CX5 and doesn’t at all feel cramped and has good visibility compared to the smaller Japanese vehicles.

Have they fixed the useless unusable display? Rented one for a week and it was the worst interface I had ever seen.

Quite honestly don’t ever use it except for looking at the clock and the wife occasionally uses the radio, though it seems to be functioning well.

I'm not completely ruling out EV's as I'm interested in the BYD 06GT hatchback but it may never leave China. However, I mostly desire Japanese hybrids or regular petrol cars. I was in an EV recently and it went down 10% after just 27KM. I don't have a home charger. I won't drive more than 10,000km but I still want a lot of range. I'm single and move a lot, have mostly simple needs I desire a Japanese car that I can sell quickly if needed. I like a fun little car the most fun I ever had in a car was the 1st gen Scion xB. I drove that car for 13 years. I won't pay over 1.5 million unless it's an Accord or CRV.

Yes I see Kingsley reviewed the 2025 CX5 here in Thailand, he seemed to like it a lot. In my case I prefer smaller vehicles I once had a Lexus RX350 I couldn't stand it and sold it within 6 months and bought a Civic lol.

With all this in mind I'm going to check to see if Mazda still sells the CX3

I am also considering replacing my car in 2028 - my current Nissan Almera turns nine in October.

I have driven both the current Yaris ICE and the Yaris Altis hybrid as hire cars in my visit to Phuket last year. The difference in the acceleration (orf just maintaining velocity) on the same hill coming up from Chalong into Kata/Karon and the hill from Karon into Patong was demonstrably superior in the hybrid. I can only assume that the Yaris Cross - which uses the same architecture - would have the same performance.
I live in a mountainous area (if I drive north or east) and the poor 1.2 litre ICE in my Almera needs to be thrashed up the mountains.
There was a thread not long ago wherein the was a discussion about the glass panoramic roofs of the high-end specs of the Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V hybrids and the distraction they cause when driving, and possibly(>) them being hard to keep the cabin cool. Why they would sell glass-roofed cars in tropical zones is beyond me.
I have mobility issues and climbing down into a smallish car and climbing up into a full-sized SUV/truck are getting more troublesome, hence investigations into HR-V, Yaris Cross, MG ZS, and the Mazda CX-30

It would be interesting to see what you choose and any advice would be welcome.

Good luck.

CX3 is still being sold here, apparently it’s going hybrid next year. Not sure if you’ve driven one, though the CX3 is fun to drive and a well built tight vehicle, just too small for my liking.

Yes, that's good info about the Hybrids performance in the hills and the more I look at buying a new vehicle I think Hybrid is the way to go. We're at the point where people are demanding every car have at least a Hybrid option. So, for now, this eliminates the Mazda CX3 and CX30 but Mazda will probably bring the Hybrid versions of these cars to Thailand next year.

I have a neighbor who bought the MG HS for about 900,000 three years ago. I've ridden in it many times and overall it's a good car but now he wants to sell it and the resale value is horrible. Because of this I'm never buying an MG.

I watched a Yaris Cross YouTube review today and I'm surprised it checks almost all the boxes. It's a Hybrid, multi camera, fantastic gas mileage 26km-30km per liter, roomy back seat & trunk, kick gesture. Cons would be a little noisy/harsh ride but that's par for the course for a car that's approx 900,000 baht. Nice, reliable vehicle for someone who has mobility issues.

An extra 300,000 baht gets you an Honda HRV or Toyota Corolla Cross. Both Hybrids, multi camera, roomier, approx 19km per liter gas mileage. Probably can't lose with either, definitely more upscale compared to the Yaris Cross.

For me right now the Honda City RS Hatchback is in the lead. It has almost everything you can think of plus those magic seats. I'm going to test drive it to see if I really like it or not. If not I'm going to test drive the Yaris Cross and Honda HRV.

But yes, for you I think the Yaris Cross is to be considered and if it turns out to be to rough then maybe move up to the HRV or Corolla Cross and keep in mind the Mazda Hybrids are just around the corner. Those Mazda's have the best interiors!

I guess because of Chinese EV invasion Honda has made a ton of changes, and dropped prices, to their City Hatchback:

1. 2025 had 5 variants, 2 HEV/3 ICE. 599,000-799,000 baht

2. 2026 has 4 variants. 3 HEV/1 ICE 579,000-749,000 baht

Edited by Furioso

I agree the Honda City ticks all your boxes. The Honda HR-V does not have a true 360-degree Multi-View Camera System (MVCS) like the new City and Toyotas.

I have a Toyota Yaris Cross and it is excellent overall, with one exception: it can have a harsh ride on some surfaces. This is partly due to the 210 mm ground clearance — great for flooded roads — its relatively high centre of gravity, and the torsional stiffness needed to help control body roll.

I have a spinal injury, so I am looking for a quieter, plusher ride. I have just fitted Yokohama Advan dB V553 tyres, which are a premium comfort touring tyre, and I am still evaluating them.

Road testers have generally reported that both the Honda HR-V and Toyota Corolla Cross provide a better ride, although the Honda is only marginally lower than the Yaris Cross.
The Yaris Cross has the best resale value and is the best-selling SUV in its class.
The Toyota dealer network is also excellent.

Be sure to give BYD some consideration. They have EVs (100% electric)...."and" hybrid/PHEVs which they call "DM-I" that stands for Dual Mode-Intelligent...or said another way a car with petrol and electric engines. Their Sealion 6 DM-I is popular. Even have "lifetime" warranties on various EV and DM-I models.

Great information. Thanks.
Looking at the difference between the Yaris Cross "Premium" and "Premium Luxury" models, the 50,000 price gap basically adds things that I wouldn't use or want: a panoramic glass roof (which adds weight to an already top-heavy car and makes the interior hotter) tire-pressure monitoring (yeah, okay), auto/foot tailgate opening (I think I can handle manual opening for my one-a-fortnight shop), and 18-inch wheels (which would make the alleged harsh ride even harder with lower profile sidewalls) and six speaker sound system (I'm partially deaf so that's moot)

Thanks also for pointing out the MG depreciation rate, er, "plummet". I hired an MG (it was ICE, don't know the model, maybe a 5) some time ago and the interior was very plastic and poorly constructed. The seats were hard and uncomfortable - my lower spine and hips are damaged so I feel this more than most) This may have been back in 2023. It had lots of kit but it felt even cheaper than it costs. And it was a slug, with slow kickdown (or CVT response, I can't recall which) but it had lots a safety equipment, but things like cruise control were in weird spots.
I was considering looking at them - there is an MG dealership in Phetchabun- to see how or if things have improved.

I still have 18 months or so to figure it out and then other options - like MAzda bringing the hybrid cx-3 or cx-30 over. Nissan also have released the Kicks e-Power which uses a 1.2l ICE (probably the same unit a in my 2017 Almera) to charge the battery only while two electric motors a the sole method of propulsion.
Nissan have already closed two dealerships in this province (one where I bought my car from 16kms down the road) and the one in Phetchabun City itself, requiring me to drive 120km north to Lom Sak (still in Phetchabun) or 100 south to Chai Badan in Lop Buri province for servicing. AND Nissan only has a relatively small market share here, and sales are dropping all over the place. So, again, this 18-24 month lead time could see where that option is as well.

I think all used cars have taken a significant hit.

It seems I remember a time here when buying used made little sense unless one was skint, now there seems to be a pretty decent used car market.

Buy something you love the look and feel of.

If your primary concern is inexpensive transportation, cheap service, and great resale value, buy an Isuzu Spark.

You are going to be shocked about resale value of even most ICE vehicles nowadays....times have changed. The days (many years) of high new & used vehicle prices in Thailand primarily caused by Japanese/western vehicle manufacturers having a "captured-audience/blind customer loyalty" are mostly history.

Chinese vehicle manufacturers have now entered the "world" market with good quality vehicles combined with low prices and that has forever changed resale values of ICE/Hybrid/EV vehicles. Some countries will fight the change with raising import taxes and/or barring Chinese manufactured vehicles but those countries are only delaying the inevitable change underway.

And don't buy a "new" vehicle if you have some vision of a good resale value like resale values "use to be"....times have changed. If wanting an ICE vehicle buy used---there are PLENTY of cheap, used ICE vehicles available.

I think you'll be suprised, now, how some will and have held their value.

Really can only use MG4 as an example, for 100% electric, as only one that's been around a couple years. But some listed just below original purchase price. Only one I paid attention to.

Would think the Atto 3 is holding price fairly well also. One of the earlier ones available, 2022.

New will hold value even more with the LifeTime warranties, and takes all the worry out of buying 2nd hand MG BEV.

The big resale price drops is completely do to EV, being better and cheaper to buy, as people wake up to that fact.

With ones you are considering, I'd highly recommend you take a peek at MG S5, as MG4 may be too small.

Stated before, but I would never go back to an ICEV. Not a fan of hybrids, as 2 systems complicates things, and unnecessary added expense.

I actually like the MG4 and I did take a hard look at it a couple of years ago. It's a nice looking hatch. Also, due to the big battery in the floor the EV seats are different, they don't have room under them and they don't have the good support that ICE seats have.

I've never had Japanese cars let me down, except for the 2000 Honda Civic Si, that little pocket rocket was too small for me and when Fast and Furious came out it got stolen TWICE.

I've seen first hand what happens to someone with a Chinese car. The owner was saying his MG would resell for xxx and his golfing friend told him, point blank, "you can't get anywhere near what you think you can", and he was right. and this MG owner, who is also rich but a super cheap Charlie, is trying to prey on new guys arriving here in Thailand and tell them "680,000 is a good deal for my 2022 MG HS".

Also, my situation might be a little unique, I move a lot it's a big advantage to have a Japanese car, especially a Honda or Toyota. If I gotta move and I gotta sell it I can advertise it and it's sold very quickly. I did have a 2006 Scion xB(the 2nd best car I ever owned) for 13 years but it went from Honolulu to S. Korea back to Honolulu to Las Vegas to Cape Canaveral to Tampa.

That's good you have plenty of time before deciding what to buy. Test drives are always necessary imho. The higher end Yaris Cross having 18 inch tires you get better handling and performance but a little louder/harsher than 17 inch tires. Still, they are considered the middle ground between 15 inch and absurd 20 inch tires.

Also note the Yaris Cross with glass roof comes with a sunshade. Also the high end Yaris gets the multi cameras allowing you to see all around you plus a top, birds eye view. For me it's such a cool and beneficial feature it's a "must have" in any new car I'm going to buy.

It's a shame about Nissan, they still make really good vehicles but they're poorly run with proper leadership they could easily get their reputation and sales back.

Yes, the Mazda's are coming, maybe just a few months away. I'm trying to hold off as long as I can because I remember seeing the CX3 in Florida back in 2018 and it's a perfect size for me, rides higher than a saloon, and even though it's cramped in the back seats it's a high quality car that would be fun for a single guy like me.
