BANGKOK, 14th February 2018 (NNT) – An anti-alcohol group has held a seminar to discuss the effectiveness of the country’s laws that control alcohol consumption.

At the “10th anniversary of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act for Thai society” seminar, Dr. Bandit Sornpaisarn, the Deputy Manager of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation, said that Thailand has been on a better path since the law was enacted as purchases of alcoholic drinks and access to stores that sell them have been declining.

Dr. Bandit added that, while the number of such stores also fell across the country, alcohol sales in men’s dormitories have continued to show frequent law violations.

In addition, it was found that underage purchases of alcoholic drinks rose to 88 percent this year from 83 percent recorded 10 years ago, just as exposure to alcohol advertisement has also risen drastically.

Director of the Stop Drink Network, Songkran Pakchokdee added that most Thais have become more informed about laws related to alcoholic drinks and consumption, over the past 10 years.

What a load of drivel. These types of folks need to get out more  . . . .

It's patently not working; all the seminars in the world won't keep folk from the bottle.  A strong deterrent and the likelihood of being caught will deter drunk driving.

The figures could have been worse if I had remembered  to wear a wrist watch every time I go shopping .

Hmmm. When all one has to do at certain times is watch the grass, oops rice, grow well there is not much else to do?

Have they? I always thought that most laws here were an excuse to make money for the police.

There are plenty of people who drink socially. There are plenty of people who drink because they have a miserable existence in life and wanna escape for a while. If you're seriously worried about those who abuse alcohol, first find out why they do it. Try addressing that issue instead of being a bunch of busy bodies trying to tell people what they can and can't do.

That is the wowsers point of view and fair enough.

Now is the time for Bangkok City Police Chief Sanit Mahathavorn to step forward and earn his 600,000 baht per year from Thai Beverage and argue the case that alcohol consumption (particularly that sold by Thai Beverage) is good for you.
