Please accept my apologies if this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find an up-to-date answer.

 

For the 30 day tourist visa on arrival extension, do I have to travel to Bangkok for this or can it be done elsewhere, hopefully not too far from Ubon?

 

I'm not going to travel to Bangkok just for that, I would fly to Phnom Penh or go to Savannakhet to get a proper 60 day visa instead.

I am sure you have in fact a VISA FREE stay in thailand via a Tourist VISA excempt... which is absolutely NOT a VISA. 

 

This can be extended in that area where you are located now. In Isaan or whereever... This is nothing special so no need to go to Bangkok for this.

There are 2 immigration offices here in Ubon Ratchaithani where you can apply for the extension. One in Sirindhorn and in the city at Ratchapat  University.
