My husband is considering taking a job in Chiang Mai. We are curious as to how it would work as far as myself and our children coming to live in Thailand with him. I have read the embassy website but am still confused as to how the whole process works. Thanks for any advice.

This is my understanding, which @ubonjoe will correct as necessary. You can all get Non O visas and extensions of stay as his dependents. He must have his Non B visa and extension of stay on the basis of working before you can apply as his dependents. During this interim period, use tourist visas.

Most embassies and consulates will issue single entry non-o visas for the family when he applies for his non-b visa. It will require their marriage and birth certificates to apply for them.

Be aware Thailand only recognise legal marriage, not de-facto.
