BANGKOK, 27 February 2018, (NNT) - According to the deputy premier for public security, Thailand's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has yet to convene a meeting to lift the ban on political activities. The move is necessary for the registration of new political parties to start next month.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, General Prawit Wongsuwan, has confirmed that local elections will be held within the year. Although the NCPO has yet to lift the ban on political activities, he claimed the matter will be tabled at an upcoming council meeting. Registration for new political parties will kick off on Thursday, March 1st.

Regarding the rumor that former politician Suthep Thaugsuban will form a new political party, General Prawit stated that he has no knowledge of such a move.

Meanwhile, President of the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, commented on the process to select seven new candidates for the Election Commission (EC). He said the selection committee will be more vigilant in screening the candidates, citing the possibility of extending the recruitment period. Pornpetch stressed that the committee will not approach anyone to take the position. Last week, the NLA voted overwhelmingly to reject all the previous nominees.

The NLA President added that he will ask the President of the Supreme Court to call a meeting with members of the selection committee.
