A 23-year-old Bangkok security guard is in police custody over the murder of his girlfriend, after being talked out of committing suicide by his elder sister.

Pol Captain Wanlop Isariyasakulwong of Phayathai precinct said Wandee Yanit surrendered to police at 1am Thursday.

He allegedly strangled to death Sudarat Choklarp, his 21-year-old girlfriend, in a jealous rage at their rented apartment on Soi Phetchaburi 10.

Wanlop said Wandee decided to commit suicide by hanging, but first called his sister to say goodbye and she managed to talk him out of it.

Police were summoned and Wandee waited at the scene.

He told police he worked as a security guard at a shopping mall where Sudarat had a job as a waitress. They had one daughter, age five.

Wandee said he became enraged in the belief that Sudarat was becoming involved with another man and strangled her with a necktie.
