National park deputy chief says Premchai won’t get loose of panther poaching

By Thai PBS

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation has insisted that the existing evidence which the police and wildlife officials have collected could be sufficient to lay nine charges against Italian-Thai Development president Premchai Karnasuta.

Pinsak Suraswadi, deputy director-general of the department, said the evidence they have in hands were correlated and were substantial to charge the wildlife hunting team. He assured that wildlife officials and forensic police work closely together as one team.

He said forensic police and wildlife forensic scientists of the department applied the same forensic standard in examining evidence which included cooked food at the crime scene and tusks from Premchai’s house in Bangkok, as well as DNA samples from the panther hide, slice of meat, and hair.

I wouldn't bet my pension on him being convicted and jailed, rather the opposite.

Perhaps a slap on the wrist and a 500 baht fine.

If its accepted that he is going to buy his way out of this, wouldn't it be great if it was by way of a substantial donation to conservation, rather than enveloping.  If you want to avoid jail, the price is 100 million to a conservation trust, and lifetime ban on guns. I would applaud that justice.

Not really, as it would have been made very clear that he bought his way out of justice - giving other extremely wealthy people no pause in behaving the same way.  They can afford it....

The fact that he has put out a public statement such as this might suggest he is getting a little nervous about the quality of evidence and needs to reassure the public....and himself.

Tusks are owned by wifie and are "registered", whatever that means.

No forensic report on that vital piece of evidence which was the dump he allegedly had on the ground near his car. Everyone is being held breathless waiting for news on this.

Plus what happened to the tape of the alleged bribe to the park ranger? Appears that got lost. How sad!

Pity they hadn't kept the tape and lost the dump.

In the meantime the circus rolls on.

I wonder what the line is at the betting parlors?

Maybe 1000:1 against any real consequences.   Even at those odds, they can't find any suckers to take the other side of any bets.

We all know the further this goes up the ladder, the less chance of jail time.  We can only hope he lives a dreary, lonely existence in one of his many homes.   No decent people have time for such a lowlife.

I like to see a remake of the movie Surviving The Game, but with sticks and stones.

Trial, admission of guilt, conviction, contrition, pardon.

I suspect your synopsis of his life style could not be further from the truth.

I see no hope of conviction because if the evidence is already enough...well you know what I mean. Another investigation that will drag on and on...

He's been arrested yet not taken into custody; AND is allowed to ignore police and court summons as he pleases.

Watch what happens if the net does close on him (only because of Thai people power )  the little monied fat Premchai will fly the coop well notified before taken into custody.

One thing for certain,he won't see the inside of a cell,

maybe a large fine, which of course he can well afford

to pay,now if you are poor, just picking mushrooms you

can expect hard time..that's justice here, well one of them

as there are two.

regards worgeordie

Mind you his  personal chauffeur might cop a 15 year prison sentence, for driving him to the location where the offences were later committed though.

And a wai. Must not forget the wai...

He won`t get loose panther poaching.

Really? So what`s holding them up? Won`t happen. Now lets jump forward a month and all will be swept under the carpet and forgotten.

I hope they watch him to make sure he doesn't get away.

5 years ago, this piece of dung was listed as #35 richest person in Thailand, though he has dropped out of the Top 50 in recent years. Hoping...but not at all confident...he will do any time behind bars, but at least be penalized substantially monetarily for his arrogant and gross disregard of the law.

"...charged with unauthorized hunting in a wildlife sanctuary, unauthorized hunting of protected wildlife, unauthorized possession of protected wildlife carcasses, illegally bringing hunting tools into a wildlife sanctuary, unauthorized collection of forest products and illegal possession of firearms..."

It's a shame fines here aren't means tested as they are in more and more countries around the globe.

ANY maximum fine (if applied) issued under the law is peanuts to him.

How long ago was this crime committed?

It's a slow moving process and he has never seen the inside of a cell and never will.

Only about 1 month ago...

Waiting for Thai forensics to get involved to collapse the case

OK more investigation and evidence gathering and testing required.

In fact 'set the pace' that it's quite OK to make a deal to avoid the justice system, the system which poor people cannot escape.

Very stupid, unbalanced, unfair idea.

Perhaps some  forum members in downtown Bangkok can confirm whether the  big traffic shutdown on Sukumvit area this evening was by Animal rights protesters. If so, they are getting bolder and have my blessing. The government may think differently. This stink isn't going away any time soon. Premchai, with all his money,  has bitten off more leopard than he could chew.

And so it begins?

Italian-Thai Development Plc boss Premchai Karnasuta has notified police that he will be leaving for an overseas trip on Friday (March 9) although police summon him to acknowledge three more charges on March 14.

The deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul, said Thursday that the police in charge of the suppression of natural resources and environment violations planned to summon Mr Premchai and his wife to acknowledge charges related to their illegal possession of African ivory tusks on March 14.

However, he said he learned that Mr Premchai would leave on Friday for an overseas trip to an unspecified country and for an unspecified period of time.
