Villagers hold ceremony to oust evil

Featured Replies

Hundreds of villagers in Kampong Srolao village in Preah Vihear province’s Chheb district gathered yesterday to hold a ceremony to oust evil from their village, believing a bad spirit was making villagers sick. District police chief Chhour Mady said the villagers held the ceremony to oust the spirits of ghosts and witches from their village because they believed the spirits were making them sick.

“My people often perform this ceremony once a year as they believe they are following old traditions,” he said. “But sometimes they do it two or three times a year if people in the village are sick often or they act strangely like a ghost spirit has come into their body.”

Mr Mady said they collected money from each other to buy things such as fruits, cakes, candles and incense as well as equipment to use in the ceremony. “They all gathered together and the old people in the village led the ceremony by praying to oust the evil, which is the spirit of a ghost, witch or sorcerer from the village,” he said.
