Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat posted pictures on his Facebook page of parts of a whale shark being sold openly in the Yaowarat area of Bangkok, the city's Chinatown.

The items appeared to be fins.

Dr Thon, from the department of marine and fisheries at Kaset University in Bangkok, said that the whale shark is a protected species.

He also said that other parts of two other protected whale species and a protected turtle species were on display though it was not clear that these were in the same place.

Action has been called for under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

So my dear doctor...instead of posting on FB....why not report to the relevant authorities....?

Whale shark is not a whale, just like the Elephant man is not an elephant...

Correct! The Whale Shark is a fish, not a mammal. The largest fish in the sea. Can grow over 12m and weigh over 21 tons! Despite their size, not a whole lot known about them...such as where they breed and where the females bear their young. It's status is: Endangered.

This is extremely unacceptable and needs to be stopped. Education, conservation and severe penalties for violations is a must. This case will not garner the attention of the Black Panther case, though it certainly should. The name "shark" doesn't help, even though this huge fish is exclusively a filter feeder (feeds on plankton) and poses no threat to humans or sea creatures other than plankton.

Probably to shame the authorities into action after having contacted them with zero result.
