Travelers arrive last year to Bangkok's Mo Chit bus and van terminal from Songkran holidays.

BANGKOK — Authorities project tourism income to grow by almost a fifth during the Songkran holiday.

The TAT on Friday released a projection stating Songkran, which marks the traditional Thai New Year, will see an 18 percent growth in tourism income.

The tourism authority said both Thai and foreign tourists are expected to spend nearly 20 billion baht between April 12 to April 16 this year, with the amount of Thai tourists expected to rise by about 3 million people – a 12 percent increase from last year.

TAT is notorious for BS numbers; i pray they are wrong as i live in a well-known tourist area; songkran is already the very worst time of the year

as the westerner resedents .... reduced to zero...

A sad but realistically related headline might be:

Tourist Bus Crashes to Grow by 18% for Songkran.

So if TAT are going to report the numbers of road deaths at songkran, it will show an 18% increase.

Somehow managing to include Thais going home for songkran, into the tourism numbers. Not sure how tourists can spend more when travel, sightseeing is restricted and 90% of businesses are shut.

Tourism money never goes down, only up. All time.

I don't believe anymore.

It will one day when tourists finally work out that Thailand is nothing more than a huge rubbish dump.

Songkran is the world's largest filling festival and the world's largest playground for death's accidents in the world, Thailand nr 1 again.

Of course, he does. You can find the original copy at the Thepprasit Weekend Market today. But remember if it rains, the market may close early.

I do not know where the peoples of TAT got the information, one is sure if you are working for TAT you must be a real optimist!

TAT must be working on the flawed logic that foreign tourists may be attracted by Thailand's different-ness, its Thai-ness, no less. Thailand boasts:

  • The now-longest military coup government in the world
  • A PM who thinks that dressing in girly clothes is more important than playing fair
  • The rabies scare
  • Human rights ideals that have long since disappeared down the toilet
  • Third rate service and delays at its main airport
  • No smoking on its most popular beaches
  • A Songkran festival that is running out of niceness, unless you can call drunken driving and killing people nice.

I'm sorry, TAT, but I think you're on a loser.

It has long amazed me how Thailand keeps attracting tourists, the points you raise above should put people off, you could add the strong baht to list. But it doesn't! The numbers that TAT gives are all in the air, but the fact that tourism has risen year after year is indisputable, just go to any airport, all full to overcrowded.

Why? :shock1:

Agree with posts 15 - on-wards.  Tourist numbers keep going up as there's a seeming limitless number of Chinese.  There are some prosecutions afoot about the continuance of zero dollar tours.  If you subtract the spending of rich ex-pats who flee Thailand; the millions who bring traffic to a standstill as the lemmings return to Issaan; the massive bill for inept police overtime; the bill for medical/morticians' treatment and the billions of man-hours lost on the roads; TAT might just want to revise their 18% down a tad.

Mostly on increased water bills. 20 billion divided by 3 million extra tourists is Bht 6666 per person, over 6 days...................hmmmmmmmmmm, not a lot.

Easy when price of almost everything went up by massive % in the past year.

From the total projected income of 19.8 billion, 10.4 billion is expected to come from Thai tourists compared to the 9.7 billion from foreign tourists.

If they can't get simple maths correct, how can anyone be expected to believe the figures?
