BTS in the wars again - this time for the able bodied!

A woman has posted a nasty experience on Facebook after a section of an escalator fell away before her eyes.

Anunya Rittichai said that she was going up the escalator at Phayathai BTS following another woman with luggage.

A whole section fell away - she said that five seconds either way and she could be dead.

Thai Rath reported on the post without mentioning any follow-up with BTS as to what might have happened.

Last week a handicapped activist was in the news after smashing a lift door at Asoke BTS.

Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTSC) on Tuesday ordered that escalators at all BTS Skytrain stations be inspected after a step on one escalator at Phaya Thai station slipped off, leaving a hazardous gap.

A passenger posting as Anunya Rittichai raised the alarm on Facebook on Monday afternoon, saying she had “narrowly escaped death” when the falling step almost struck her on the foot as she was about to board the escalator.

She said a woman ahead of her stepped on the loosened metal surface and moved further up a moment before it came free.

Within 20 hours, the Facebook post was shared 42,300 times and had drawn 63,000 reactions and 15,000 comments, mostly expressing shock.

BTSC used its own Facebook page to confirm that the incident happened at 3.03pm on Monday at Phaya Thai station.

It said no one was injured because the escalator stopped immediately and was promptly sealed off.

It said all Skytrain escalators had been installed by reputable European and Japanese firms and underwent continual maintenance to ensure their safety.

BTSC said the incident was unprecedented in 18 years of Skytrain service.

It ordered all escalators inspected immediately and apologised for Monday’s incident.

Nothing to see here folks. Western and Japanese contractors are to blame.

When i see the mechanics working on those escalators they don't look western or japanese to me....

And when i walk to the skytrain there are LOADS of deep holes in the sidewalk, many holes even go underneath the concrete tiles and look very deep. It's safer to walk on the main road and  avoiding the cars there.

Probably no problems with the escalators.....But with Somchai & Co's 'maintenance'.....

Yep, in BTS Asok, when I enter the Escalators I can hear and feel a cracking noise under the stair cases crumbling more than often *CRINGE*

'It said all Skytrain escalators had been installed by reputable European and Japanese firms and underwent continual maintenance to ensure their safety.'

The first part might be true, I'm less convinced about the second.

'BTSC said the incident was unprecedented in 18 years of Skytrain service.'

Not to worry. There are plenty of other BTS precedents to fill the void.
