Children at risk of rabies– despite vaccinations – after savage attack by dog

THREE CHILDREN are at risk of rabies infections, despite being vaccinated, after a rabid dog attacked them in Samut Prakan province on Tuesday night.

 

“The risk is particularly high when the victims receive several or severe bites,” Professor Thiravat Hemachudha, a prominent doctor and lecturer at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine, said yesterday. “In such cases, victims should be monitored for symptoms for one full year.” 

 

He spoke after a recent dog attack in Bang Sao Thong district.

 

A dog bit three children, aged between two and 10 years old, on Tuesday night and a test later showed the animal was rabid. The young victims received several wounds, some being severe. 

 

 

Rabies has caused widespread concern in the country lately, after many rabies-related deaths were reported earlier this year. 

 

 

The situation was so worrying that the Disease Control Department director-general Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoenchai held a teleconference meeting with provincial public-health chiefs across the country yesterday to follow up on preventative measures. 

 

Village health volunteers have been instructed to go door to door to advise people to watch over their children, most of whom are now on school break, as they may play with dogs or cats and get bitten. 

 

 

“Some people think getting bitten by their own pets may not be dangerous. But such a thought is among the common causes of rabies-related deaths,” Suwannachai said.

 

He also said rabies vaccines could not completely eliminate the risk of infection. 

 

Suwannachai said his department had been trying to raise public awareness that even minor scratches from dogs could not be ignored. 

 

“If an animal licks your wound, you also have to quickly clean the wound repeatedly with soap and water for about 10 minutes. Then, add Povidone-iodine [betadine] and go to see a doctor,” he said.

 

 

In Samut Prakan, local livestock officials vaccinated several stray dogs in the area where the rabid dog lived as an initial precaution.

 

Regarding news reports that suggested the Livestock Development Department might be setting up a rabies-vaccine factory, Thiravat commented that relevant authorities should carefully review such a plan. 

 

“Rabies vaccines for animals are now widely available at a cheap price,” Thiravat said. 

 

Asked about rabies vaccines for humans, Thiravat said Thailand had never had a factory for human vaccines before and expressed doubts about the practicality of such a plan. 

 

Earlier this week, an investigation was announced into alleged conflict of interest in rabies vaccine purchasing linked to a former top official in the Livestock Development Department.

Great, keep the pressure  up with the  stories and  kill all those mangy things, sadly in a few  weeks or after this bout it  will all be back to normal again with them feeding these dogs again. wonder if the temples are destroying their dogs??

It´s all in what you believe. For them, they just believe and focus on with help of meditation that they won´t get bitten. That´s the highest safety of all.

The one I always remember is hydrophobia, fear of water, cos it's so distinctive.

Are stray dogs more important than children in Los?

Once we were at a temple with loads of dogs and suddenly a dog attacked a kid...the men grabbed poles to hit the nasty thing and they all left home.

 

Even without rabies those dogs are a menace..get rid of them quick!

Without trying to take anything away from the official's efforts to contain rabies I have a question. Well a couple of questions.

 

If a vaccine is given to a dog that already has rabies, what good will the vaccine do? How can they tell if a dog is rabid without tests? Obviously talking about animals that are infected before visible signs show.

 

If rabies is already ingrained into the dogs system and the vaccine doesn't do anything, would this not lead people into a false sense of security, especially if the animal was a pet?

I don't recall all of the symptoms, but what I do remember is that once the symptoms do appear, there have only been one or 2 cases in history where the victim survived.  With that in mind, monitoring them for symptoms seems a little futile.

Saves them on the roads  too, you'd  really think if they added  up all the "success"  stories of their amulets and other associated  junk they'd see that for every 1  "saved" there would be 3-4-5-6000dead

Because some idiot farangs prefer nothing better than feeding the blasted things ! Maybe they should introduce a 500 baht fine for feeding the flea ridden mutts - with 20,000 for farangs - either that or make the feeders pay the hospital bills - that would stall them !

Ride my bike every morning and always being chased by these mangy strays trying to bite me. Have already been bitten and now on rabie shots. 

When is this government going to take this seriously and round up the mangy critters. NEVER HAPPEN

More concerned  about bullet trains that only the rich will ride.

Vaccinating "several dogs" in the area where the rabid dog was discovered is doing too little too late. I remember more than a decade ago being in Koh Samui years ago when a rabid dog was on the loose and all hell broke loose, with guys running around with nets and clubs.

 

Later that day, on a motor scooter, I came up behind a lorry loaded to the brim with dead dogs. A local told my Thai girlfriend that it was standard practice, when rabies struck, for all strays  to be rounded up, put down and disposed of in a way which would stop the virus from spreading.

 

It seems the Thai authorities took things more seriously back then and had more sense than they do now.

As the infection progresses, someone infected with rabies may develop any of these symptoms:

• irritability.
• excessive movements or agitation.
• confusion.
• hallucinations.
• aggressiveness.
• bizarre or abnormal thoughts.
• muscle spasms.
• abnormal postures.

It's all about the $$money$$ when it comes to rabies shots, dogs and cats do not need rabies shots every year. A dog in his lifetime only needs 3 rabies shots...Just think who is getting $fat$ off all the rabies shot every year?  It's just not the ones who make it or the Vet's who give it...But the country's who are pushing it!

Got a solution?  We are all going to die, the only variables are time,date and place, oh and cause of death.  Why do anything?  Because we can.  If you can't bear to live on this planet with people who consider humans, that contribute to many important fields of endeavour, more important than disease ridden nuisance dogs then I suggest you find a high balcony with a low rail.  Don't forget to check there are no stray dogs on the street below.

any death of any one, especially young kids should be condemned ,  even 1 death from HIV, incest, abuse, road accidents, food poisoning, murder, rape, fighting  should also be condemned.

To your warped  view -  maybe we should ignore all deaths as a bit of bad luck and just lump the rabies deaths in amongst the total and no one will be a the wiser.

But But - it doesn't work, haven't you been following the thread closely - all you need to do is stop feeding them, neuter them and in a few years all will be roses - no dogs- no rabies - no problem - no ongoing threads on the problem.
