Thai Police push for a 12 points and you’re out system for driving licenses

BANGKOK, 24 March 2018 (NNT) – Police are pushing for a driving license points system in effort to improve the standards of driving and promote road safety measures for all motorists.

 

The proposed amendment to the road traffic law was unveiled following a meeting of a national committee on the prevention of road accidents chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon.

 

Pol Maj Gen Ekkarak Limsangkat, commander of Special Branch Police 3, said the amendment draft has been examined by the Council for State and is to be forwarded to the cabinet for consideration. 

 

Under the points system, motorists who may commit traffic offenses will have points deducted and be suspended from driving for a certain period of time when the points are used up. 

 

The suspension period will be made longer for motorists who may continue to commit traffic offenses. They will eventually lose their driving license if their records fail to improve, Pol Maj Gen Ekkarak said. 

 

Each motorist will have 12 points when the system is put into operation and updates the police on how many points a motorist may have lost at any given time.

 

One point is deducted for offenses such as not wearing seat belts or crash helmets. Two points are deducted for running the red light or driving in the wrong direction, while three points are deducted for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics or a hit-and-run. The points deducted will be reinstated after a period of 12 months. 

 

Pol Maj Gen Ekkarak said traffic violators who may fail to pay fines will see their points deducted further. For example, a speeding offense sees one point deducted. However, such offending motorists will have an extra point deducted if they fail to pay the fine.

Interesting. Half the population dont even have a licence to start with. For a points system to work it would mean the cops would actually have to police traffic, which I dont see happening anytime soon, given their total inability to date in doing so.

Plus the points being discussed here are laughably low. Drunk driving should be a ban. here at three points a time you can do it four times before you reach 12 points. How does that improve safety?

so driving without a license , quite viable in some places, results in how many points lost ?

The weakest link are the ones who need to inforce the rules..

I would suggest this only happens during election years but . . .

And after 12 months you get a clean slate!...

 

So if one can keep it down to one hit & run and a couple DUIs in a year your good to go...

Hmmmm, looks like even more folk not bothering with getting a license..

 

Seeing as a zillion underage kids ride to school with no license under the BiB noses, will they be fined by having bags of crisps and dough nuts removed from their person...

Smart motorists won't have a licence at all. Get stopped for drunk driving, let a purple or two drop onto the ground and then drive away. And you don't even have to say: "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?"

So it's ok to have up to four hit and runs before you loose you license?  That's very reassuring!

to ride or drive they will still do it, what ever .!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No real punishment in Thailand,

unless your smoking on the beach

Bit unfair to the humble goldfish there Father.

Laughably low points system. I can see Thais driving even worse to see who, given the lack of enforcement, can actually amass the most points.

Unless there are a lot more cops on the road I see it being quite difficult to actually reach 12 points in a calendar year.

Is it April 1st? Someone somewhere is havin a larrrf.

I can see where they are coming from with this idea.

 expecting people who live ,disrespecting the law ..to..,in some magical way ,gain respect for said law ,and, the fact they have lost the ''privilege to drive....sure I can see that happening... Amusing Thailand

Proves the police are really concerned about kids' health and the dramatic increase in diabetes.

My vehicle is registered in my wife's name. So any offences caught on camera, eg speeding, the ticket comes to our home address. She has a license but never drives. So how will that work?

They should really have had a look at punishments in first world countries, they could easily use Google to get an "idea" how first world countries have reduced road carnage...

 

UK..get 12 points and lose license..

 

No insurance..8 points, 2/300 pounds fine and car taken away, get it back when show insurance within 14 days, if not it is crushed, plus over a hundred pounds charged for removal and storage..

 

No license, similar stuff.

 

Drink drive...Banned, fined and car removal.

 

The list goes on......

 

Death by drink driving, usually prison..

 

A UK truck driver has just been given 14 years for driving under the influence causing the deaths of 8 people..
