Songkran revelers will be allowed to ride on the back of a pickup truck, but will not be allowed to splash water from the truck on main roads as part of the Royal Thai Police’s safety measure guideline to be applied nationwide during Songkran festival.

RTP spokesman Pol Gen Veerachai Songmetta said Tuesday that said the guideline had been distributed to all police units nationwide for implementation, with main focus on safe travelling, convenience in travelling and the opening up of road space to facilitate travelling.

Although riding on the back of a pickup truck is permissible, he said police on the spot could exercise their discretion to give a warning or to take legal action if they find the conduct of the revelers or the driver may pose a threat to their own safety or the safety of the other people.

Why do the Thai authorities make such ridiculous pronouncements?   Does anyone think that the Thai people are going to heed them?   Anyone?   Anyone?

Or ride on trucks with empty barrels and pretend, then. :w00t:

Thailand has got the blood shortage covered, water shortage covered, alchohol sales coverd, extra law enforcement covered.....''Let the Good times roll''....

Will it be legal to ride under them as many are  gonna  end  up doing that anyway, I mean I dont want to die and then find out I did something illegal as my corpse is dragged  down the road

He called on revelers to abide by Thai tradition and to hold Songkran-related activities in a creative fashion while warning young revelers to refrain from sexually abusing female celebrants or face tough penalties.

What's a tough penalty according to Thai tradition?

You ask whats a tough penalty?

Normally 200 baht passed quietly over, then on your way.

Depends entirely on ones social status.

Or perhaps the trucks can dump that white powder on you and you depend on the bar revellers to wash it out of your eyes.

No wonder the police up here in the far north just hide away and see nothing for a week. If your boss left you with this predicament what would you do? Look out for the thousands of photos showing this not happening.

each year it is something different. I wish they would not allow ice. That is actually very rude and can cause great harm. NO ICE rule.

Another contradiction, another year of deaths!

Throwing water on the main roads is stupidity beyond contempt. Lets hope that the law in enforced, and the people who actually need to  get somewhere, can get there.

Oh thought you asked "what's a trough penalty?". Not a tough one. A trough penalty refers to a penalty put into law whereby extortion of bribe is possible from a silly law or rule. :-D

Ah, that will probably be seen as "riding with criminal intent", the same as the sandwich-eating students charged with a similar offence.

They make up the rules as they go along, it keeps everything 'fluid'.

Fantastic safety measures. All deaths and accidents will surely be stopped now.

Agree. Hate Songkran for the ice water.

To the thousands about to die stay dry .

All it needs is for the Supreme Saviour to invoke Article 44 banning accidents, then we will all have a casualty-free Songkran.

The Thai authorities are the BIGGEST killer in Thailand.

Great--means more water/powder/ice left for assaulting the tourists on the side roads.

It is so stupid.....I don't find words.....

Now we are just waiting for the usual depressing statistics......Day 1   xxx killed.......Day 2   xxx killed

And if by the end of the holidays only 467 were killed, the safety measures will considered yet another success for the Royal Thai Police.....:coffee1:

Yes indeed, next week they will, once again, erect a tent, in exactly the same position as in previous years, it will be well manned by police and for a reason that evades me, volunteers, up to 15 personnel  at a time, and they will simply sit there on their smartphones. Meanwhile , a few feet away...................................................

At least it is possible to escape Songkran - in stark contrast to the annual 31 December - 1 January ritualistic nonsense from which there is no escape whatsoever wherever on this great planet of ours you have the misfortune to find yourself!
