Tourism and Sports Minister confirms safety of Thailand as tourist destination

BANGKOK, 2 April 2018 (NNT) - The Tourism and Sports Minister, Weerasak Kowsurat, has assuted that Thailand is a safe tourist destination.

Mr. Weerasak dismissed a report by a foreign news website claiming Thailand is one of the world's most dangerous places for young British travelers as exaggerated.

The Tourism and Sports Minister expressed his confidence in the safety of all tourists at the country's popular tourist destinations and called on Thai people to be a good host to foreigners.

I dont know who is right or wrong here.

But The Sun website claiming Thailand is one of the world's most dangerous, but is based on only 411000 visitor to Thailand and 25 dead.  but the officiel says around 994000 was here.

The numbers of deads must about 50% (About 3 to 100000) lower or someone is not telling the true about visitors

Edit. Seems like i was reading to fast about visitors. Its 411000 below 40 Year

Quote

Thailand, which recorded 25 deaths of Brits under the age of 40 from 411,000 British visitors has a death rate of 6 per 100,000 visitors.

In some respects it is pretty safe, and some areas certainly are well policed and any crime that does happen is tackled fairly well and in good time.

However in some areas such as on the roads it is an absolute nightmare, just look last week alone at the number of bus deaths for one.

The tourism minister is deluded if they're declaring tourism in general as safe, the stats are ugly for a reason

Pretty sure not may Thais, and especially those in the government, give a fig about 20 Myanmars burned to death.....!

Well, if the minister says it's safe, clearly everything is A OK.   Good to know that.

Yep, I had to look that one up too.

Asserted or assured I guess was meant.

The original figures are based on statistics, and to get any sense you need to look further. The newspaper didn't because all they want is a good headline.

Many of these deaths are self-inflicted.

Caused by young naive travellers. Many on their first long trip. Influenced by alcohol, motorbikes without any experience (and no licence), and playing silly buggers on balconies.

Yeah, blame it on a farrang. Regarding self-inflicted motorbike accidents, to what extend is a motorbike rental responsible handing a 750 cc bike over to a 17 year old with no driving experience and license? And just in case you never heard of it, many balcony accidents happen due to low railings. So who is naive here?

But the food is amazing... Just don't drive, go to the beach, or find a date with a Thai lady friend.

...unless you don't feel the ravenous appetite for Fukushima fish, paraquat sprayed veggies and prawns fed with antibiotics.

Maybe the discrepancy in numbers may be Thailand counting the total number of entries of UK citizens on tourist visas, failing to note that many are doing visa runs aka repeat customers? Newspaper may count number of different individuals. Maybe... just a thought....

I find the added mismatching long sleeves to his jacket a little suspicious :cheesy:

Well that the Thai minister for tourism has to express Thailand is a safe country to travel is kind of a must: even it's noth the truth.  Yes Thailand is a safe place as long you are not traveling on the roads by any kind of cars and as long you not use tourist attraction, beside visiting a temple or anything else like that. All the excitment stuff is dangerouse at Thais working in tourist industry defenetly not care about safty at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always in denial about anything detrimental in respect of tourism.

Pattaya and Jomptien beaches are dangerous because of pollution from sewage and general garbage,  Try going to Pattaya city council and demand they immediately clean up the sea and beaches. Bringing new sand from distant places is not solving anything only covering up and lining some haulage companies pockets.

This minister is fine and the roads are safe because he is in a convoy everywhere he travels with police front and rear of it,     He has blinkers on.

The one thing that really gets me is tourist going out in a boat to do some diving or snorkelling and being hacked up by a boat propeller driven by a stupid negligent moron.

This seems to occur with some regularity.

There are things I would like to do in this country but will not, as the operators cannot be trusted with your safety.
