Security agencies prepare measures for Songkran

 

 

BANGKOK, 3rd April 2018 (NNT) – Security agencies and the governors of Chiang Mai, Udon Thani and Songkla have held a remote meeting to facilitate holiday travel and revelry during Songkran, with officials pressing police to reject any offers of bribery and to strictly enforce the law. 

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Gen Prawit Wongsuwan said today that security agencies are focusing on information gathering and collaboration in the lead up to Songkran as they are drafting a plan to deal with any emergency situations that may arise. The plan will see different zones set up to better share responsibilities, with an emphasis to be placed on both inner areas and areas along Thailand’s borders. 

During the Seven Dangerous Days of Songkran 2018, from April 11 to 17, authorities will work collaboratively down to the local level. Road safety centers will be established at both the provincial and local levels and data on road accidents going back three years will be used to inform precautions. 

Authorities will be strictly enforcing driver behavior and will take action against any dangerous driving, without discipline or in violation of the law. 

On double-decker buses, which often experience accidents during holiday periods, security units have resolved to press their operators for greater orderliness, and will be inspecting 900 issued licenses. The large vehicles, alongside ten-wheeler trucks, will be made to use secondary roadways when traveling in the northeast to reduce congestion. 

The Office of the Secretariat of the National Council for Peace and Order has voiced concerns over weather conditions at this time, noting that Songkran will result in an increased use of water amid a drought conditions in some regions. Authorities have been ordered to provide assistance where needed.
