Shooting at YouTube in California wounds at least three, female suspect dead

SAN BRUNO, Calif. (Reuters) - A woman opened fire at YouTube's headquarters near San Francisco on Tuesday, sending employees scrambling into the street and at least three victims to local hospitals before taking her own life, police said.

 

Police did not release any further information on the suspect or speculate on her motives for the shooting at the offices of YouTube, which is owned by Alphabet Inc's <GOOGL.O> Google.

"We did locate a victim with what we believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It’s a female,” San Bruno Police Chief Ed Barberini said at a news conference, describing the person police believe was the shooter.

 

One of the victims, a 36-year-old man, was listed in critical condition at San Francisco General Hospital. A 32-year-old woman was listed in serious condition and a 27-year-old woman in fair condition. Authorities did not release names of any of the victims.

 

A YouTube product manager, Todd Sherman, described on Twitter hearing people running, first thinking it was an earthquake before he was told that a person had a gun.

 

"At that point every new person I saw was a potential shooter. Someone else said that the person shot out the back doors and then shot themselves," Sherman said on Twitter.

 

"I looked down and saw blood drips on the floor and stairs. Peaked around for threats and then we headed downstairs and out the front," Sherman said.

 

Google told NBC news in a statement that it was coordinating with local authorities.

 

"Customers said they heard what could have been gunshots when they were on their way here," Natalie Mangiante, an employee at Big Mouth Burgers located near the YouTube building, said by phone. Mangiante said she did not see or notice anything.

 

Local television images showed YouTube employees walking out of the building with their hands raised.

 

Last month, YouTube announced it would ban content promoting the sale of guns and gun accessories as well as videos that teach how to make guns.

Well RIP to the dead woman, guess she felt she had reason to shoot the other people.

In the country where she had the right to bear arms. .. and she did.

Her reason apparently was that she believed Youtube was conspiring against vegans.  An Iranian Vegan terrorist. We are getting very specialized these days.

You are right except for the terrorist bit.  She was no terrorist, just an angry woman from San Diego who had a grudge against You Tube.  Not the first and won't be the last.  At least she has adopted the American way of "When someone upsets you, take a gun and start shooting".

The USA has fewer firearms related deaths per capita than numrous smaller countries. The smaller countries however, are not in the world spotlight, a spotlight manned by narrow minded, self rightgeous and ill informed critics.

The two sides of the "gun" argument in the USA continues unabated.  We all have our view on it.  I would take issue with you though over your "anti-American rhetoric" comment.  It is not anti American, it is anti the American mindset of "some" Americans over their obsession with gun's and the second amendment.  You have every right to defend those people as I have the right to criticise them.

Any videos of the actual event?  Ironic being the location...

Having seen her picture on a few sites like the BBC etc. and read about her general MO...she sure looks and sounds like a nutjob with issues.

One sad aspect of this incident is that it's really not seen as very significant considering the limited casualties. Really, the reasons it got this much publicity are the timing after Parkland and that it happened at a major media center.

A similar level incident in rural Texas would be local news.

Another sad aspect is how these internet "companies" encourage people to post content and build businesses on their websites and then one day they push a button and delete you and you go down the "memory hole" and their life is turned upside down.  I'm sure she clicked "I Agree"previously on some 60 page document allowing just that. Not excusing this woman's actions of course but I understand the frustration and anger that led to it.
