Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal at an army conscription center Wednesday in Samut Prakan.

SAMUT PRAKAN — A student activist leader called for an end to military conscription Wednesday morning with a theatrical flourish.

Chulalongkorn University sophomore Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal showed up to at a temple conscription center to ask for a draft deferment because he opposes it. While there, the 21-year-old contrarian rolled up his sleeve to reveal it was covered in wrist watches, a swipe at the luxury watch scandal that has put a top junta leader under a cloud since late last year.

Creative. Like it. Now let's see what charges can be invented: Wearing a watch with political intent...?

Might slim his chances of draft deferment.

Power to his elbow.

It's hard not to like this young man. He sees unfairness/injustice and protests against it - but does so peacefully and with humour.

Just wait until a certain Thaivisa demographic are done with him. They'll have him crucified upside down on a burning door...

What a great kid.  Sure he scares his parents to death.  He should challenge the unelected Prime Minister to a debate.

Good luck young man. As China now has one leader and Russia has one leader for many years to come it would be very likely that Thailand will also continue with their one leader for many years to come also.

The U.S and the rest can do nothing to stop it. So good luck to you and your family. If Putin falls and Xi is overthrown in a revolution then maybe.

A temple conscription center. What is the stand of the Buddhism Council regarding weapons and war? Wouldn't be surprised if the army invited the monks to the nearest bar during the procedures to get out of the way.

Brave young man! Albeit, in case he gets drafted, his action may have drastically limited the chance to survive basic training.

This young man is a hero in my book! He is prepared to speak in public the thoughts of millions of Thais throughout the land! Others mutter in corners behind closed doors, whilst this brave soul wears his heart (and watches) on his sleeve. More power to his elbow I say!

Yes, he's a brave guy. Kudos to him. I really admire and respect him. He's got guts, that's for sure. What brilliant, pertinent comments he makes, too - absolutely hits the bull's eye. Great young man!

Also, isn't there something sick about using TEMPLE precincts for military conscription (as another poster has commented - have just seen that!)? Buddhism is probably  the most peaceful religion on earth (next to Jainism) - but of course the Thais have to  link it firmly in to the all-controlling Military! But then - Buddhism as taught by the Buddha in the Pali scriptures (e.g. don't blindly follow Tradition, don't blindly believe your teacher) and Thai 'Buddhism' have very little to do with one another!

I am pretty sure he will be questioned about his watches.

:clap2:very well executed!
