Past Looms Large Over Thailand's 'Political Future'

Parit Wacharasindhu of the Democrat Party speaks in Bangkok on Wednesday evening at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Thailand.

BANGKOK — Shadows of the past stalked the table where the new-blood princes of Thailand’s political future assembled Wednesday night.

There was the middle-aged party scion locked in tight orbit of his towering late father. Next to him, the great young hope whose promise to revolutionize the nation’s oldest party echoed the unrealized promises of its last “golden boy.” To his left, representing a party whose ballot box ownage has twice been combat-booted from power, a man with a rank before his name who avoided the word “Thaksin” despite intoning his mantras dutifully.

“Once this government goes back to the barracks, we want to make sure they don’t come back out to seize power again,” he said

Hear hear, albeit a tad optimistic

Oh I thought this was gonna be a topic about wearing period costumes and watching love destiny every night.

Parit Wacharasindhu     Varawut Silpa-archa,          Preechapol Pongpanit          Thanatorn Juangroongruangkit,

Democrat Party.      Chart Thai Pattana               Pheu Thai Party             Future Forward Party (founder).

Four smart, well educated Thai , past and future politicians. Given a chance, any one of these candidates could possibly draw Thailand out of its present state.

Parit, Varawut and Thanathorn are fluent in English. I do not know Preechapol's ability to speak English..

They look an impressive mature team. Unlike the other man/child military team that goes around sprouting about how they will fix vital national issues, like deck chairs and pavements, the lottery system and twerking....like somebody else we know.

My crystal ball tells me Prayut will be running things for a few more years yet.

>>Though he declared for electoral politics, he did betray a strain of elitism toward voters by assigning blame for the “low quality” of Thailand’s politicians on an electorate that is “90 percent farmers” who are “uneducated.”<< Quote from the article.......(Warawut.....Democrats...)

With an attitude like that, we are not moving anywhere soon...

Sorry guys, with an shining exception (Future Forward).......It is old wine in new bottles...:coffee1:

corruption ...................................................... simple as that

There might have been some promise that it was going to be dealt with with some sincerity when you have a man in power that has total control...............but no, that has not transpired

Prayuth Chan (O) Cha had his chance to make a difference to this country but he just wasn't up to the job, I believe he wanted to make history but just didn't have the balls to follow through, very very difficult task to take billions away from the corrupt and powerful

The alternative is unsavory, there are probably enough people in Thailand that are now fully aware of the corruption and are fed up with it to the extent that they now recognise it is only the people that can do something about it, the Shins enriched themselves for decades along with many others, Prayuth might have had a chance but he failed

what next, well we all need to look at history and other countries were "the" people have reached the limit of what they can put up with when it comes to corruption at the levels it is in Thailand, I believe it will no longer be tolerated either way

You're probably right. This article from The Diplomat seems to agree

A very relevant article:

"While it [NCPO] will continue to fight corruption in some cases, it will not enforce the rule of law where this conflicts too much with the hidden interests of Thailand’s opaque power centers within either the security services or the Royal court. While this remains the unwritten rule of Thai politics, the fight against corruption in Thailand will never truly be won."

Yes a very credible set of young politicians representing all political parties.Interesting - and reading a little beneath the lines - none of them has the slightest expectation the current constitution will last for 20 years. Their views of the current government do not seem to be favourable (I'm understating).

Moreover are we seeing a younger generation representing the country who sick to death with bigoted old men in charge?

All this - if true - makes the future quite dangerous.
