Requirement to declare valuable items at airport terminated

 

 

BANGKOK, 11 April 2018 (NNT) - No Thais are longer required to declare valuable items to customs officers before leaving the country following the Customs Department’s recent termination of its mandate. 

The Customs Department has decided to remove the 4th requirement in its 60th directive issued on February 26 demanding those leaving the Kingdom at the airport to reveal their valuable belongings such as cameras, watches and laptops to the customs officials. The requirement has now been removed following public criticism. 

Customs Department Deputy Director General Chaiyut Kumkun claimed that not everyone had to declare their belongings to the customs office. 

He added the 4th requirement was meant for manufacturers and event organizers, who often travel overseas with a large number of items. By declaring all items before boarding, they can prove on their return that the items they carry were not purchased overseas.

So Thai people don't have to declare watches and bling? That will come in handy for someone when they are no longer in power and want to leave town then.

Farang have to pay twice the amount from now on. 

Now He can travel with his watches as free as he wish.

The Customs Department on Tuesday annulled a regulation issued in February requiring travellers leaving and entering the country via airports to declare personal belongings such as cameras, brand-name handbags, mobile phones and computer notebooks.

 

The department said the regulation had led to misunderstanding and confusion.

 

Travellers leaving the country had been required to provide documentation for the listed possessions and show them to Customs officials so they could be registered.

 

The registration documents had to be shown to customs officials who will conduct a random check on their return to Thailand. 

 

The regulation was intended to ensure that items purchased overseas would be subject to taxation on landing. 

 

The department still requires Thailand residents returning home from abroad to declare any such items purchased overseas and valued above Bt20,000 and to pay taxes on them.

 

Department director general Kulit Sombatsiri said the regulation was revoked because it had led to misunderstanding and discomfort among Thais travelling abroad during Songkran.

 

He said the regulation would be reviewed over the next few months and adjusted to make the process clearer.

Phew, that's a relief. Only need to hide things in a carry on bag to avoid tempting those airport thieves now.

So make sure the thai wife keeps all the expensive stuff.... No problems then.

No need to worry, completely exonerated due to of course ill health,

back pain from carrying all that heavy metal at one time!!
