Mystery chunk of metal halts Bangkok-bound train from South

By The Nation

Railway officials are attempting to identify a large piece of metal that came close to derailing a Bangkok-bound train in Prachuap Khiri Khan early Tuesday.

All 500 passengers from Yala and Surat Thani were transferred to vans and a second train to continue their journey.

Train driver Prasit Molee was slowing for the approach to Kui Buri station at 2am when he spotted the chunk of metal, but he could not stop in time to avoid rolling over it.

The metal caused severe damage to the braking and air-conditioning systems, effectively putting the six-carriage train out of service.

Prasit said if the train had not been slowing, it could have been derailed.

Officials are trying to determine the origin of the metal amid speculation it could have fallen off an earlier train or been intentionally placed there in a sabotage attempt.

A Yala-Bangkok sprinter train was partially damaged after hitting a metal objectwhile it was running in Kui Buri district of Prachuab Khiri Khan province early on Tuesday(Apr 17).

The crash with the object, later proved to be a large metal sheet, at 5.00am happened near the railway crossing at Ban Nong Tasua in Tambon Kui Buri, causing damages to the braking systems of three cars on the front, and the motor oil tank for the  air conditioning system.

The train couldn’t proceed further forcing the evacuation of some 424 passengers on six  cars to buses instead.

That must be the new 4.20am bullet train. Those things are so fast, they shed metal and vanish by the time they pull into Hua Lamphong Central. Stationmasters are unable to time them and have requested Swiss chronographs. The Fat Controller is currently testing assorted models.

If you're talking about accuracy using a high grade swiss auto watch, a quality quartz watch is consistently more accurate FWIW

Many years ago I work in railway repairs on locos you would not believe what foreign objects can do to 2 inch soiled steel buffers when hit at speed ie a cow in this case so credit to the driver it looks likely the metal object took out servo hoses to the brakes and aircon and could have easily derailed if hit at speed.  boring stuff I know.
