What is the significance of the rocket festival. Sounds pretty cool.  Are homeade rockets allowed at these festivals?

Bun Bang Fai in Thai. They are all homemade by villages and city and other local communities. They are part of rain making and fertility festivals. But the Anthropology is much more complex than that. There are processions through the town with drinking and dancing ,sound stages, mobile sound trucks. The  biggest is in Phanom Phrai though Yasothon is more famouse. In Kalasin the rockets are round.  People have great fun.

If you are interested in such things you should Checkout the nine gods festival in Phuket and the Naga Fireballs in Nong Khai.

Thanks for posting!

I want to see one of those huge Catherine wheel type rockets - so is Kalasin the best one to go to?

From what I've seen on Youtube, it may be wise to stay well back and wear some decent running shoes.

I'd like to get a video of the 'launch' - so planning on using a 300mm telephoto lens.

I joined a rocket team last year do was able to get to the launch pad. Unfortunately our big rocket did not release parachute and the small one exploded 10 feet of the ground. Correct Kalasin for round rockets but the procession is not so wild and usually has a moral them. And stresses traditional Thai culture.  Comfortable footware is essential as is change of clothes and Sun hat etc.

My team

It a top day out.  Plan it carefully Over 50 k people attend Try Phanom Phrai too you won't be disappointed.  I have the dates for Sisakit now. BTW

I am currently in Beung Kan district and I'm told there is a rocket festival here in Beung Khong Long on 30 th May. The locals were out collecting today and I got a glimpse of their effort.

Probably not a major compared with some but apparently is a busy annual event here.

There is a Pizza joint about a mile out of Phanom Phrai. It's called popular pizza. Useful for those living in the area or visiting for the Rocket Festival which is 29th and 30th though things are living up now.20180528_162025.thumb.jpg.bcf9ce32503a319654b6bca0d7d9c1a4.jpg

A 16 year old family member and his mates tried to build a rocket .

They were trying to get the gunpowder compacted into the rocket

The gunpowder ignited and killed him and severely injuring the others .

People get killed cycling and Skate

boarding. What's you point? Your 16 year old family member probably did not know what he was doing.  Where did it happen? When did it happen? In which newspaper was it reported. Did it really happen?

Happened up in the mountains near Chiang rai .

He wasnt building it , his friends were , got hit by some shrapnel , straight through the heart .

Happened a few years back, it wasnt reported in any newspapers or media .

It did happen , I spent a few nights with the corpse in the house , awaiting cremation
