Supreme Commander leaves the door open for post-retirement political career

BANGKOK, 27th April 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Supreme Commander has confirmed security plans to handle any political challenges which make develop in May. Meanwhile he stopped short of denying speculation about his political career after retirement.

Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Army Gen. Tharnchaiyan Srisuwan, said on Thursday that the National Council for Peace and Order is standing ready to ensure peace and order should there be any political disturbance on the fourth anniversary of the 2014 military coup in May.

Gen. Tharnchaiyan assured the public that all related units have measures ready for implementation if required, while confirming that all plans are in accordance with the law.

He added that the Royal Thai Army is in a position to support the government and act according to government policies.

And when asked if he plans to join a political party that Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha is reportedly planning to form, Gen. Tharnchaiyan said that whatever may happen after his retirement is a matter for the future.

In addition, the Supreme Commander said that he has not been informed about a report, which claims Thailand is one of nine countries likely to host peace talks between the United States and North Korea.

However, he played down the speculation and said that Thailand should not be the venue for the talk, which is set to happen next month, because there has not been any preparation for it, so far.

So it goes, how it went.

No doubt they can see how the General and his Deputy are no doubt benefiting from a political career ! Happiness to all that support him

How many Supreme Commanders does Thailand have? I have been under the belief that there was only one supreme commander that being General Prayut Chan-o-cha. He reminds everyone frequently of that fact and that he is the one running the show which includes the army.

Now this upstart comes along and is also addressed as the Supreme Commander. Are there any others we don't know about?

Prayut retired from the army to become a politician, PM, leader of the ruling party. Upon retirement the Supreme Commander  position became vacant and  Gen. Tharnchaiyan Srisuwan stepped up to the post, and it seems is following his predecessor.

You are confusing Supreme Commander with commander supreme.

It is funny how they never talk about the people.  The little people just count for nothing in this country. Is there a Thai leader who is not self obsessed ?

We all should smoke whatever they are smoking over there at Bloomberg.   Maybe it will bring happiness to the people.

Thank you for that explanation; ahh! I now understand. So PM Prayut has mothballed his army uniforms and is now only a humble politician, albeit self appointed Prime Minister. Which now gives him access to unlimited taxpayer funds (Thi Niyom) for his political electioneering purposes.

Well he has the keys to the tanks, so he already has everything he needs to enter politics in the normal Thai fashion

There is a some confusion here .

A look at this may help.

Prayut Chan-Ocha has never been Supreme Commander, now known as Chief of The Defence Forces. He was Commander of the Royal Thai Army between 2010-2014 when he staged a coup on May 22 .

There as many Supreme Commanders as there are senior military men prepared to pay for the title and get approved by the other SC's

Or when he was told to stage the coup.  He does not come across as somebody who makes big decisions.

That's just not true, there' been plenty of preparation already. They cleared away the deck chairs, the outdoor food stalls, made a mascot, released some very catchy songs and (last but not least) limited twerking to only 3 bumps. And they did all this without firing a single bullet. Who says Thailand is not ready to host the talks? Let him step forward!

What door? There's just a big hole.

Thailand should not be the venue for the talk, which is set to happen next month, because there has not been any preparation for it, so far.

You mean there's another reason for making Pattaya clean up its act?

Thanks for that link. Interesting that most of them are only in the job for about one year. Presumably that allows for a greater number to share the glory of the position but hardly provides for much continuity.

Some of the confusion probably arose because the story incorrectly referred to him as Supreme Commander rather than Chief of Defence Forces.
