A total of Bt1.16 million cash was returned to four victims of “call-centre” scams as part of the Royal Thai Police’s 14th cash-returning event on Friday.

National police advisor Pol General Thanitsak Thirasawat presented the Bt1,166,617.99 to the unnamed four victims at the national police headquarters in Bangkok. He presented on behalf of the RTP centre for protecting people against crimes committed via phones and electronic media.

The returned money was a portion of what the four victims had been duped into wiring to scammers – Bt3.5 million.

Thanitsak noted that from December 8 until today, the centre had handled 421 cases, representing Bt209 million in damages to victims duped by call centre scammers posing as authorities and making bogus claims that led the victims to wire money to gangs.

Police had already concluded about half of the cases while the remaining 62 cases in Bangkok and 156 cases in the provinces are expected to be concluded by the end of May, he said. Out of 547 arrest warrants issued, police had apprehended 375 wanted suspects, he added.

Pol Maj-General Surachet Hakpal, deputy commissioner of the Tourism Police Bureau, said the call-centre" scams could be regarded as having been eradicated from Thailand.

Police forces would remain vigilant and crack down on future criminals that emerge, he said. Those falling victim to such crimes can call the centre’s hotline 1155 or the Anti-Money Laundering Office’s operation centre hotline 1710, Surachet said.

It might be so simple that the call center gang had the time to use them or make them disappear. How would it be to say something positive. Like, great that they are given that much back.
I guess that never crossed your mind. Blaming the police for what your fantasies tells you that they´ve done, without any proof at all must be much better, right?

@idman, I guess this news was a little bit more important than your comparision. Anyway, It was a nice try to get all readers of the topic.

However, it might be that it is true, and most of the call center activities has benn eradicated from the country. We do know, though, that it will always come new. That means they will have to get on top of many other problems, so that they can stop theese kind of people already att the entrance to the country.

With thousands of Chinese relocating to Thailand call centers will proliferate as the scammers help to relieve them of their cash.

Eradicated is wishful thinking and will likely come to bite top cops bum.

3 million returned, admirable, but only the tip of a very large iceberg.

It seems to be a criminal in this country is ok if you don't make anything out of it but as soon as big money comes into play the BIB get out there and do something about it and we know why that is,don't we.

Yes, like much heavier punishments, starting with mandatory 10 years in jail, mandatory fines starting at 10Million Baht and total confiscation of all assets.

He says with his tongue firmly placed in the side of his cheek. The cops may be catching a few but new replacement recruits are arriving daily from African countries to Thai borders to replace those lost in battle with the cops.

Immigration seem helpless at stopping the inflow. Parts of Bangkok are looking like darkest Africa, particularly at night and particularly with women in their evening tribal costumes.

Big Joke is fighting against the tide.

Ahem, you mean the ones the police don't control, didn't set up or receive tea money on?

And there's me thinking the call centres could be located in other country's to perpetrate this scam.

I don't think it will ever be totally eradicated once they catch all the scammers they have on file  there will still be New slipping through the net!!!

Replaced by Forex scams...

And General Custer was heard to say "Indians, what Indians?"

Yes, I do have a sense of humour. Just can´t see it here.
So, this is what you mean. When the police actually acheive something very good, and take care of a major problem in an effective way. At the same time they are giving back the money they find to the rightful owners. That´s the time when we should look down on them as theifs, and say as much negative as possible about them?

I guess that just not what I choose to call humour. I would place that in the category for misplaced and degrading comments made out of people that feel the need to complain.

Ok, opinions barried. Everybody has a different sense of humour.

I understand that they could've spent some money already - I'm just curious as to what they spent 1 Satang on?

Great news.  Last week prostitution was stamped out in Pattaya and next week there will be a road safety campaign to sort out the driving.

People in authority should know better than to make sweeping  unbelievable statements to the media

remember

Rabies has been eradicated

There is no sex industry in Thailand

The taxi driver problems at major airports has been removed

The police will stop unauthorized checkpoints

on and on it goes when it will stop nobody knows

Could someone please explain what a call centre scam is, how it works and why there seem to be so many of them in Thailand ?

True.

There are many little scams reaping millions that the police seem to choose to ignore.

One group is selling cars in Pattaya at around the 100,000 mark.

Owners have returned over seas.

Send money to the Western Union as indicated.

Car will be brought to you and you do not release the money until you are OK with the car.

Then they send you a link to a fake site in the hope that you will click on the link and release the funds.

Several people are regretting their actions.

And the police don't want to know anything about it...

I think the Honda Accord has been sold about six times already lol.
