Visitin home and bringing 4TB hard disk full of movies - safe or not?

Featured Replies

I need to visit my home country and I have an external hard disk full of movies (around 4TB). Will it be safe to bring it with me?

Thank you again for your valuable opinions...

Paulus

Suspect it would make a great deal of difference as to your home country.  Susect USA would take a great deal of interest in any such drives content coming from this area of the world.

Which way are you taking the drive?

TO Thailand, unlikely to be an issue (obviously "adult" content is verboten).

FROM Thailand, depends where you are going.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I took 3 x 2TB hard drives full of "stuff" to London and returned with an extra 4 TB drive in my carry on bag + mother board CPU and ram in suitcase back to BKK no one batted an eyelid..they where more concerned about my steel toecap shoes !

I think an external HD or a couple of USB drives would be pretty standard in most peoples luggage nowadays. I have been back and forward, with a couple of external drives, probably 20 times.

If you think about it, whats the difference between the drive/card inside your laptop/camera/phone or an external drive. If home country had an issue with the content on the drive, they would also have issue with content of laptop, phone, camera etc.

If you are worried, there are tools to hide files and folders from those making a quick check. Google is your friend :- hide files external hard disk

Hi Paulus. 4TB of movies is A LOT, usually about 2GB each. How long are you going away for cos it'll take you a long time to watch 'em all they'll be old hat before you see them, unless of course it's a little business you are doing. Ever heard of torrents?

You must have a hell of a lot of time on your hands mate. 1371 movies, that's nearly TWO TEARS if you watched two a day. The DVD ones, off Beach Road or Tukom?

OP, depending on what your home country is, it can be a gamble.

Typically agents have orders from the top as to which regulations they should particularly enforce, so if I were you, I would search the internet for forum posts by other travelers who recently entered your home country with hard drives and see what they have to say.

In Switzerland for example, downloading and keeping a copy of copyrighted material is legal as long as it's not redistributed and strictly for personal private use.

I've been collecting for quite a while and have watched almost all of them (some multiple times) various sources but I try to stick to DIVX or H264 720p encodings which depending on length if the film is 800-1500 MB

So two a day , EVERY day for over two years. You need a hobby, or a life.

Collecting for 18 years and still alive thanks.

I suppose you could call that a hobby. But 1371 movies in 18 years is only 76 a year, 6 a month. Not very good is it.

Lol you are telling this fella to get a life but you are doing endless calculations on how many movies he has to watch over various time frames as if its important.  Having the option to dip into a big library of decent movies and watch one whenever the mood takes sounds pretty good to me. His collection probably pisses all over netflix.
