BANGKOK, 15th May 2018 (NNT) - Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Rungroj Saengkhram said today the arrest of Pol Lt Col Santhana Prayoonrat, an adviser to Don Muang New Market, was based on evidence.

Pol Gen Rungroj said the arrest was carried out according to evidence, not because the police had been pressured to do so, adding that Pol Lt Col Santhana has the right to file a lawsuit in his defense against those accusing him of extortion; although he is barred from leaving the country and threatening vendors as he could risk having his bail revoked.

The defendant claimed the eight vendors who sued him are not in fact vendors at Don Muang New Market while Pol Gen Rungroj insisted they were.

Meanwhile, police have arrested Kanes Preamkrut, who works for Pol Lt Col Santhana, in Nakhon Nayok province. He was accused of extortion of beauty product vendors at the market. Police are still looking for other alleged perpetrators.

Pol Lt Col Santhana’s father, Pol Col Somchai Prayoonrat, will be summoned by the police on May 18th after having allegedly violated Section 189 of the Criminal Act by offering refuge to the perpetrator.

Good to know he's at 'risk' of having his bail revoked for threatening witnesses.

As always with these kinds of cases, you have to wonder what's going on behind the smoke and mirrors.

I have little doubt extortion and more was occurring here, since it's commonplace.

But as for the motivations of the authorities in cracking down on this DM market at the time they did after it had been openly operating there for years, that's where it gets more intriguing.

Perhaps it is a family trait.

Don Muang has been corrupt for the last 3 decades. The police station has seen more reshuffles than a game of blackjack. Hopefully this is just the start and the will get his sidekicks as well.  A former politician from Don Muang who is now banned is his number two. We can only hope they will get him initials  GH as well. Too long operating illegally with impunity.

Was there not a similar case came up a few years ago where an army general was arrested or charged for protection racket type thing?  I think it was a market on rama 4, perhaos hualampong or patpong area.

Not sure where that one went. Probably nowhere like this one will
