NEC recognises 15 political parties to contest election

The National Election Committee has officially recognised 15 out of the 20 political parties that registered to contest the upcoming national poll in July, an official said yesterday. “In total, 15 political parties have been officially recognized by the NEC,” NEC spokesman Dim Sovannarom said.

 

Mr Sovannarom said that the NEC is also reviewing documents filed by the remaining five political parties. The NEC last week closed its 15-day window for registration of party candidates.

 

The NEC last week also asked the Interior Ministry to take legal action against anyone who has called on the public to boycott the poll. Former opposition CNRP leader Sam Rainsy, who lives in exile and has called for a boycott numerous times, posted a message on his Facebook on Friday in response to a call for his arrest, saying that abstaining from the poll was within the rights of voters.
