Court extends detention of former RFA reporters

Featured Replies

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday extended the pre-trial detention of two former RFA reporters for six months for investigations to continue over espionage charges. Investigating Judge Pech Vicheathor announced a six-month extension of pre-trial detention for former reporters Uon Chhin and Yeang Sothearin.

Last week, deputy prosecutor Vong Bunvisoth requested the judge to extend the pre-trial detention of the two journalists, who were jailed last year after being arrested in Phnom Penh’s Marady Hotel on November 14 and accused of espionage for sending reports to the United States. Keo Vanny, defence lawyer for Mr Chhin and Mr Sothearin, said yesterday that the judge decided to extend the detention in order to continue his investigation.

“The reason that the investigating judge decided to extend their detention for six more months is because the investigation is not yet finished and also because they are accused of a serious crime,” he said. “It is very unjust for them and I think that even though the court decided to extend their detention, nothing new will come of it in terms of the investigation,” he added.

If one isn't on the same side as The C-Government, one will *always* be found "guilty".
