Trouble at home for journo at Kameinei's funeral

Featured Replies

[Opinion. Let’s get this out of the way first. Max Blumenthal is an observant anti-Zionist Boston Jew. The son of political journalist Sidney Blumenthal and Jacqueline Jordan, Jewish on both sides.

He also attended Khameinei’s funeral in Tehran, the largest ever held with 10.2M mourners and one Western journalist: Max Blumenthal.

Is Blumenthal pro-Iran? Is it somehow fishy for an American to go to Iran in the midst of war? Blumenthal describes himself not as pro-Iran but anti-imperialist. He has appeared on Iran’s Press TV, Russia’s Sputnik and China’s Global Television Network. Does that make him pro-Russian or pro-China.

Blumenthal opposes U.S. interventionism and Israel’s illegal wars, including war on Iran. Economic blockades and US foreign policy influence by governments like Israel. He praised Spain for refusing to allow the US to use NATO joint bases for attacks on Iran.

He is published at The Nation, AlterNet, The Daily Beast, Al Akhbar, Mondoweiss, Media Matters for America, Al Jazeera English, Russia Today, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times. Blumenthal is author of four books which appeared on the NYT bestsellers’ lists. You may be interested in Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel (2013).

Of course, the US was going to search his cellphones! But a good journo doesn’t leave trails on phones. I wonder how you fly to Tehran these days?]]

US reporter fighting back after border patrol seized his cell phones

Max Blumenthal says he was singled out at airport after Trump ally Laura Loomer targeted him in online posts

When reporter Max Blumenthal went to a cafe in Tehran one night a few weeks ago to upload videos from his reporting on the funeral of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, he began seeing social media posts from Trump ally Laura Loomer targeting him, including one that suggested he should be “taken off the plane by US Marshals when he lands back in the US … [and] detained”.

The confiscation started a legal fight that freedom-of-the-press advocates say shows the determination of the Trump administration to crack down on members of the media whose reporting it disagrees with.

On 10 July, border patrol agents at Virginia’s Dulles airport flagged Blumenthal, founder of the independent outlet the Grayzone, for a “secondary inspection”. Agents asked him how he had paid for his trip to Iran, whether he knew the people who had hosted him and whether he had plans to return.

They asked to see his two phones. He declined to give them the passwords. They seized the phones, but not his laptop or digital cameras.

The federal agency returned the cell phones a week later – less than 24 hours after the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee filed an emergency motion in district court seeking their return.

The US federal government said they couldn’t get into the phones and returned them, and that therefore the motion was moot. But Blumenthal went back to court on Wednesday and got a judge to agree that the government must prove it – by supplying evidence of who had his phones, when they had them and what they did to them. Federal judge Leonie M Brinkema gave the government 14 days to respond.

Blumenthal’s treatment and case pose “serious constitutional problems”, said Seth Stern, chief of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation. “The Trump administration is finding any excuse it can to target journalists it dislikes, and border searches are one more play in the playbook.”

Solution:

Create new account in email.

Maybe something like

HaveANiceDay666@gmail, etc

Factory reset your device before traveling international.

No problem giving a pw for a fresh phone.

After you get home, factory reset again.

Do backup from cloud from your original account.

Don't smart people realize they have tracking devices in their pockets 😎

Yes, Blumenthal supports Iran, which explains the Iranian government's invitation for him to attend. Even The Atlantic agrees.

If he'a an apologist not only for Iran but China and Russia, what's his deal? It is just recognition in certain circles, like Alex Jones or David Icke?

Guy like this will have this covered in spades. The amazing thing is that he didn't do anything "wrong" exactly like material support for terrorism. Perhaps his whitebread nationality aids repressive govts for propaganda value. He may have even been treated like a VIP.

I respect reportage in The Atlantic. Max certainly sounds like a class A slimeball.

Yes, Israel is absolutely one of the world’s epicentres of evil. It may even be the worst one. But epicentres of evil are hardly rare these days.

And, indeed, the US is “the most perfidious force on the planet” but, again, there sure is no shortage of perfidy.

To insult those Iranian women in that way betrays Blumenthal’s class struggle. One couldn’t get more low-class in the sub-basement parking lot.

But it’s undeniable that war on Iran was a pre-emptive strike by Israel and its American toady for no reason whatsoever. There was no goal, there was no plan. And Israel bailed as soon as they realised that.

Israel’s attack was not even payback for the tens of thousands brutally murdered in the streets—for no reason. It was merely a display of power that was a predictable failure. It may have galvanised other Mideast countries, notably Saudi and UAE, against Iran but they were never Iran’s supporters, anyway.

Max is a dark joke but some element will follow him just like some follow Trump or Bibi.

I wonder what’s in it for Max, and who pays for his tickets.

What's not to love about this guy ?

Of course he will be targeted by this rabidly pro-israel adiminitration.

Just like The Bidden admin targeted their opponents. (lawfare).

A favorite of yours perhaps? They're obviously genocidal psychopaths by their past and present behavior, especially towards their own people.

I'm only for anyone who kills terrorists. Not civilians.

As has almost all countries armies, directed by it's leaders.

Continue to this day? Those who are involved in this war, on all sides. My favorite is the US. What other country's agendas are , aren't what I support. Civilians get killed in all wars, and in this one, the blame is mostly on Iran's regime.

The land of the free is looking less free these days. No right to travel? No problem. No right to communicate what the commies don't like? No problem.

Shutting people up that you don't agree with you? No problem.

They are trying every trick in the book to circumvent constitutional rights

by pressuring private (big tech) companies to act as proxies

as seen with Facebook,Twitter, google,Youtube censorship and de platforming

advertisers and sponsors shamed into removing support,de-banking ,GoFundMe

pressuring Signal,Apple and others to either remove or provide back door keys for encrypted apps , Flock cameras, Ring doorbells a relentless attack on personal privacy.

At the airport they can claim that you are technically not on US (any other counties) soil and as such have no rights.

In the UK they can detain you at the border/airport and you have no right to silence or to refuse handing over passwords even though they have the audacity to claim you are not under arrest just detained without charge !!! its just crazy Orwellian double speak.
