Does anyone know how "Siamese Cats" are referred to in Thailand? G/f kept asking me if I wanted a "Siam cat", but I came to discover that she was using the term to describe ordinary domestic short hairs and tabbies.

Hi BambinA,

Thanks for the pics. Yes, yes. She was using the term "Siam cat" to refer to mixed-breed soi cats, as you said. We would call them "domestic short hair", but that's not important. When I say "Siam(ese) cat", she thinks I mean soi cat. So how do Thais refer to the entire family of Siamese cats? Or are there only words to describe specific breeds such as those in the pics you posted?

Thanks, lah!

I really like Siamese. They don't have to be pure breed. I like the way they look (the traditional ones, not the new ones that look like ET!), and if you get a good one, they like to talk, are very intelligent, and very loyal to their human.

Hi, Rexall. My B&W tabby had several litters of kitties as shown in your first photo. I think they are called seal point. White with brown on tips of ears, nose, tail and paws, with blue eyes. Never had a prob giving those babies away!

Hi Jet,

I had one years ago. I guess he was just a "mutt" but he had the markings and personality (catality?) of a Siamese. Wonderful animal!

I guess you are talking in the past tense? No kittens at present? She wouldn't have to be Siamese-looking. Just happy, healthy, socialized "soi cat" would do. I am in Khon Kaen. I wrote elsewhere about striking out looking for a kitten at the Agriculture Fair up here last week. Any leads?

Thanks, lah!

Rexall, kitties are everywhere. I just started thinking that I needed a cat for a rat prob, and presto! There she was. I'd take a soi kitty anyday. Street smarts are good attributes.

I have 2 real Siamese cats (Nr. 1 version from Bambi's post) and they are really amazing cats.

They are indeed very smart and funny at the same time.

Yes they 'talk' a lot and the funny thing is that I understand what they are sort of telling.

I am hungry

I want to play

The toilet is dirty

I need to go toilet

I do not like this food

Things like that.

If you hide their toys in an almost unreachable place they will find a way to get it.

Really very interesting cat to have if you like cats.

Cheers,

Alex

Off topic a bit, but i have a big fat european cat and she talks all the time. And i think that i actually understand what she is saying in the tone of her meows.. Or perhaps i need to get out more often?
