Although the Department of National Parks, Conservation and Wildlife (DNP) warns tourists may be fined up to B1,000 for feeding wild monkeys within national parks, it was not made clear whether local officials would fine tourists for any similar behaviour in Phuket. Photo: DNP

PHUKET:-- Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong this morning (May 31) ordered the local environment chief to expedite the installation of warning signs at key areas to warn to tourists to interact with troupes of wild monkeys appropriately.

“Set up regulations on how tourists are to interact with monkeys, and ban feeding any wild monkeys,” Governor Norraphat said.

Despite the signs, one will always see some donkeys feeding the monkeys.

100,000 Bath in fines fore smoking  on the beaches of Phuket and 1000 Bath in fines for giving shit food to animals.

Great possibilities for the monkey food sellers: sell some bananas, a quick call to the BIB friend and a 1000 baht fine for the monkey-feeding tourist split 50/50. More lucrative than simply selling fruit!

With a few word changes and a different photo these would be useful in front of police stations.

“I want tourists to interact with monkeys in the right way,” Gov Norraphat said.

What is the right way to interact with monkeys? I think it would be better to advise people to stay away from them. They can be very dangerous.
