webfact
A popular Koh Samui publican and Hash House Harrier has died suddenly in England A popular Koh Samui publican and Hash House Harrier has died suddenly in England. Alan Johnston, 65, was found dead in bed at his sister’s house in Carlisle, Cumbria, on June 2. He returned to England in March for treatment for a face tumour but the cause of his death is not yet known. After working for the ambulance service and running pubs in England, Alan moved to Samui in 1995 and opened the Red Fox Bar in Lamai. He sold the bar last October. The bar became the unofficial headquarters of the Hash House Harriers and was also popular for its quiz nights and Sunday lunches. Friend Peter Hill described Alan as “one of life’s great characters”. “He was a natural publican who made everyone feel welcome. Most of his customers went to his bar just to see him and enjoy the banter and awful jokes,” he said. “Alan was a very generous man with an enormous zest for life. He was always on the go. He is going to be missed by so many people on Samui. He was truly a one-off. “He was finding it difficult to cope with the cold weather in England and was looking forward to returning to Samui’s hot climate. Sadly, that was not to be.” Alan, who was a big supporter of Carlisle United FC, leaves wife Toi and stepson Nong. robertson468
A lovely, lovely Guy, with a wicked sense of humour and the epitome of the welcoming host, albeit he had sold the Red Fox a little while back. Rest in Peace Alan, a light has gone out on Samui!
