BANGKOK, 5th June 2018, (NNT) - The Meteorological Department has predicted that a storm hovering over the central part of the South China Sea will make landfall in Hainan but have little to no effect on Thailand. However, the agency will closely monitor the situation.

The depression’s epicenter is 250 kilometers away from Vietnam’s Danang, with a velocity of 55 kilometers per hour. The storm is expected to reach Hainan today and will remain in the region until June 8th. Therefore, travelers are urged to check on weather updates if planning to visit the island.

The department also indicated that a monsoon trough is dominating the lower portion of the North, the upper part of the central plain and the Northeastern region of Thailand. The agency also added that the depression over the South China Sea and the Southwestern monsoon lingering over the Andaman Sea and the Gulf Thailand have gained strength, resulting in more rainfall in all regions of the Kingdom. Residents are therefore urged to be prepared for such conditions.

The local weather bureau has also forecast two-meter high waves in the Andaman Sea and asked fishermen to proceed with caution.

Meanwhile, in Khon Kaen, a flood of some 50 centimeters depth was reported in the Mueang Municipality, causing heavy traffic on Mitraphab road for several hours.

The Provincial Governor has instructed local Disaster Prevention and Mitigation officials and offficers of the Ban Ped sub-district Municipality to work around the clock to drain the flood water out of Nong Khot Lake into Chi River through man-made canals. The lake is one of the water retention zones in the province’s capital district.
