Hi there!

I'm considering getting a small cyst on the side of my head removed in Thailand. It isn't that big, but big enough so that I keep my hair fairly long on the sides so it won't be visible. Does anyone know how much I could be looking at for this, and would it be advisable to do in Bangkok or Chiang Mai?

Also, what would the procedure be for this? In the UK I guess I would go to the GP first and get referred. What about Thailand?

This can be done by a general surgeon in either Bangkok or Chiang Mai.  Cost will depend on the hospital you go to and the technique used, and whether a biopsy is indicated.

If it is a pilar (hair follicle) cyst simplek excision under local anesthetioc, no biopsy, cost soemwhere in the raneg of 6,000 - 15,000 baht depending on hospital.

I suggest going tio St Louis Hospital in Bangkok on Sathorn Road or Camellian Hospital on Thonglor (off Sukhumvit), both are non profits. Ask to see a general surgeon. You do nto need to see a GP first.

Thanks!

I'll probably go to St Louis or Bangkok Christian Hospital for it. It's only a small cyst which should be a standard procedure, so not too fussy about wanting assurances over quality.

I was quoted about 4000 baht for a similar procedure at a government hospital in Chiang Mai... is Bangkok medical care that much more expensive?

That range was for private hospitals.

Though both government and private hospital costs are indeed higher in Bangkok than Chiang Mai. A little bit in the case of government, by about 25% in the case of private.

Ok, makes sense. How (pricey) are the private/semi private wings of the Bangkok government hospitals (Siriraj, Ramathibodi)?

EDIT: your original post talked about nonprofit hospitals. Should we assume those are in the "private" price range or where do they fit in?

Nonprofits are private hospitals but less expensive than for-profit private hospitals.

Siriraj private hospital costs about the same as nonprofit private hospitals, give or take. It is a separate hospital part of the Siriraj complex. I don't know that Ramathibdhi  has a separate "Premium Clinic" for outpatient consultations but AFAIK not a separate hospital or wing for inpatient care that is private.

All government hospitals offer private/semi private rooms within their main hospitals, this is a different arrangement and cost is same as in a ward plus the cost of the room only i.e. the medical charge is the same. But where a separate private wing or structure has been developed, it is different.

Most government hospitals have an after hours outpatient service where yo ucan specify your doctor, be seen by appointment etc (though still with much longer waits than at a private hospital). These cost more than the public channel but less than a private hospital OPD. In most cases there is nto a private arrangement for inpatient care except for private/semi-private rooms.

Basically in order from cheapest to most expensive:

  • Government hospitals, public channel
  • Government hospital after hours cliniucs (outpatient only)
  • Govt hospital private sings/hospital annexes where available & non-profit private hospitals
  • Private hospitals

d. But there are hidden costs to use of government facilities in terms of time and travel (takes more visits to accomplish the same thing; have yo make a visit in person just to secure an appointment; whole day waits are not uncommon). These matter more to some people than to others, e.g. people who work/for whom time is money and/or  people who live far away will often find that it is not actually financially advantageous to use government hospitals whereas those who live nearby and who have time to spare  find that it is.

Thanks for that very helpful and detailed post. When you say "whole day waits are not uncommon," you mean that people are sitting there all day just to get an appointment... or do you mean that they go there in the morning, get an appointment, and come back in the afternoon to see the doctor?

Worth adding: My experience at the government hospital in Chiang Mai was I got the appointment and came back, then had to wait 1-2 hours (after showing at the appointed time) to see the doctor.

I found the hospital staff's English was very basic, but at the end I was able to make everything work.

Maybe the private annexes and premium clinics are better?

Had mine removed at a private hospital in Phuket, from entering the hospital to walking out of the hospital was approx 3 hours maybe less it was a few years ago, cost 13,000bht.

I mean sit there all day waiting to see the doctor. You do not get an appointment tome as such, it is first come first serve.
