A cargo ship sank off Sichang Island while it was heading for Bangkok Port with about 70 containers of cargoes on board.

The cause of the accident which happened  shortly  before midnight on Wednesday  was not immediately known but the Department of Marine and the Royal Thai Navy have floated warning bouys to mark  the sunken vessel and its sunken and floating containers   for safety navigation.

Four crew members of the cargo ship, named Pataranavi 6,  were safely rescued and no injuries were reported. The Department of Marine has also set up an operation centre to salvage the floating containers.

Freight ship sinks but crew rescued

By The Nation

Four crew members of a freight ship that sank near Koh Si Chang in Chon Buri province late on Wednesday were rescued, officials said.

Phithak Watanapongpaisal, director of the marine traffic and safety of Laem Chabang deep sea port, said his centre was alerted at 11.40pm that the Phattara Marine 6 boat with 72 containers had sank near Koh Thai Ta Muen, which is located south of Koh Si Chang.

The boat sank at Area G at a latitude of 13:05.5 and longitude 100.48.6.

Phithak said the four crew members were plucked out of the waters shortly after the accident and rescuers managed to retrieve 20 out of 72 containers. He said it might take three days to retrieve all the containers.

Scuba divers have plugged the oil tank of the boat to prevent leakage, he added.

The accident occurred after the ship had left Laem Chabang and was heading to Bangkok Port.

I'll bet there's a few people annoyed about losing their container contents. We never ised to insure our containers, basically the idea was that these events were rare enough not to worry about losing the goods inside every once in a while

I visited Koh Si Chang recently.  The island was infested with hideous red millipedes every where we went; some as big as small snakes.  I wonder if that's what was in the containers.

The sad part is that a sister ship, Pathara Marine 5, capsized and sank in September 2015 in the mouth of the  Chao Phraya River between Samut Prakarn and Chonburi, with the loss of all 4 crew members.

The operators obviously learnt a lot from the first incident...................... They were lucky this time around.

Coasting vessels should have more than four crew members.
