Police arrested a Grab Taxi driver in Bangkok early Thursday for refusing to return a notebook computer and cash left in his car by a Cambodian passenger.

Police arrested Sutham Traisuwansiri, 37, after instructing him to report to the Bang Khen police station at 1am.

Sutham initially denied the charge but police later found the notebook computer and the handbag of the passenger, Chanso Thiron (not the official spelling), 30, at his rented room in Bangkok's Bang Khen district.

Police searched for Sutham after the Cambodian passenger alerted the Grab office in Thailand, which in turn sought help from police.

The Cambodian woman said she called a Grab Taxi to drive her from Rajabhat Phra Nakhon University to the Royal B Condominium in Bang Khen and accidentally left her notebook computer and a handbag containing US$323 in cash in the vehicle.

The Grab office contacted the driver but he turned off his mobile phone so the office sought help from police.

Sutham said he has driven a Grab taxi for just a month. He added that he had already exchanged the dollars into baht and had used the money to pay a car installment.

Plumbing new depths of stupidity here. His office rang him so obviously his identity was known and had he returned the stuff, he may have got a reward. Turning your phone off does not mean that you have got away with it and cannot be found.

This is a Grab driver then.

If it was a regular taxi driver, he would have voluntarily returned the items to the owner...thousand of them do according to TAT.

Dangerous to driving a taxi and now even grab in Thailand. How they hope to attract more tourists?

Now Thailand becomes more like a South American country, famous for being very dangerous.

If he had already exchanged the funds into THB and paid his car loan bill, then I’d either ask the bank/finance company to reverse (aka “claw back”) the payment under the grounds that the funds used were obtained thru criminal acts... or... Id move to seize the car itself, as it is (in part) proceeds from the commission of a crime, sell it at auction and return the victim her assets and any fines also deducted from the balance.

Are we going to get a, "Grab taxi driver returns lost wallet", in a few days, or are those constant fictional messages only for the local taxi drivers!
