Hi,

I'm doing my first long stay (8 months) and I would appreciate some help.

I have done a 3 month trip before and all I did was to get a tourist visa (while in my home country) and then extended it by 30 days via local immigration Thailand. I bounced around in different guest houses and I guess they all did my TM30 properly because I didn't get any fee while extending my visa (2018-March).

Now, however, I'm a bit confused and would love your input.

Lenght of total trip:    8 months

Visa:                             Tourist Visa 60 day + extension 30 day via local immigration (Pattaya)

Place of stay:              Condo Rental (same place for 8 months)

Plan:                            After 85 of my first days I will leave the country by plane to do a week of vacation in another country. I will return by plane within a week, perhaps two.
TM30:                          The condo owner has said that she will do the TM30 for me when I land in Thailand on Day 1.

Here are the Q's.....

- When I come back to Thailand after my small trips by plane, do I mail the condo owner to do the reporting "one more time" or how does it work? Can I report my self?

- Since my setup of Tourist Visa (60 day) + Extension (30 day) and leaving on day ~ 85 makes it so I don't stay any consecutive 90day-period - do I have any obligation to do report my stay besides what the condo owner does (tm30)? If I understand it correctly you guys with a long long term visa needs to file a report every 90 days. Can I skip that one?

- Are there any limits to how many times I can enter Thailand by plane? i.e. limits to "border runs"?
- I will probably apply for a tourist visa to Thailand before leaving that country that I'm currently doing my small vacation/"border run" in. Any pros/cons to do this?

- What are some things that you think I've missed that would be good to know?

If reporting to Pattaya immigration they will want the TM30 form every time you enter the country. They will allow you to do it yourself.

No need to do 90 day reports since you will never stay longer than 90 consecutive days.

There is no written limit on the number of times you can enter the country by air.

For the new tourist visa it should not be a problem but that does depend upon which embassy or consulate you do it at.

That is between you and the Condo owner to arrange.

If they are registered with Immigration to do online reporting, or not, then you can file the TM30 yourself as the 'tenant' or 'possessor' of the Condo, but Immigration may want a copy of the landlords Tabien Baan, ID card, or rental contract.

Only need to report if staying more than 90 consecutive days in Thailand.

Not probably, but should.

If you plan to stay a further 8 months, you should also obtain a further TV to the two already mentioned.

60 + 30 = 90

60 + 30 = 180

60 = 30 = 270

If your plan is to live in Thailand on TV entries, you may eventually run into difficulties with Thai Embassies/Consulates limiting the number of TV's they will issue. You should consider an annual extension of your permission to stay based on retirement from your local IO, (assuming over 50) if your long term plan is to stay in Thailand.

I think what you referred to as a 'long term Visa' in your post, is in fact an 'extension' that so many of us acquire to stay here long term.

It is in fact a 'permit', not a 'Visa'.

Excellent! Your help was much comforting.

I'm only 31 and there doesn't seem to be any longer option availble for me (i'm from scandinavia) than the TV.

All in all it seems doable then? ?

Yes, it should not be any problem.

But I would recommend the METV option. Its pretty easy required in Scandinavia, but you need to show a bank statement. Then you'll have a multi entry TV for the whole period, can travel in and out as much as you want, and do not have to apply for two new visas. Only need to do minimum of two quick border runs out and in during the period. Best option for your plan of 8 or 9 months stay.

If you want, you can even apply for a new one in your home country right after your first METV, and stay for another 9 months (60+30 × 3).

One of the problems with a METV is that you need to be employed, self employed, or a student.

(Maybe retirees as well at their discretion).

Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

Quick Check list

  • Application form (click here to download)
  • Original passport
  • Copy of passport (the page with your information)
  • Two photographs
  • Copy of arrival and departure ticket to Thailand
  • Bank statements
  • Employment certificate
  • Hotel/Accommodation reservation

Not many employers would allow 9 months off work, unless you can take sabbatical leave.

Good idea with the METV. However, I just quit my job to do a longer trip and while I could create a 'fake certificate' I don't have the stomach to do it. Hehe. Perhaps they will call and make sure that it's correct. I could however provide 10 year of taxable income and bank statements covering my expenses for a couple of years, but I'm not sure if that's enough (?).

You guys have pretty much solved my problems for the time being - thank you!

To be employed or similar is only required in some countries, in for example Germany you just have to show money in a bank account

Not in Scandinavia. Only a bank statement necessary.

That should be sufficient in Scandinavia. No employment certificate needed, at least where I come from. Pretty much the only country not participating in the World Cup ?
