Democrat party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva urged the National Council for Peace and Order to lift the ban on political activities, noting that the junta needs not to be worried that national security may be compromised because of the lifting of the ban as it has all the powers to deal effectively with any parties whose activities are deemed a security threat.

He pointed out that the main problem confronted by existing parties is that they could not hold any meetings or undertake any political activities while new parties which are yet to be established cannot set up branch offices.  He also warned that the problem would worsen the longer the ban is not lifted.

Pointing out at the junta’s concern with security problem if the ban on political activities is lifted, the former prime minister said that party meetings or the fact that party executives going out to meet their members should not be a problem for the junta as it has at its disposal all the security-related laws to deal with activities it deems to be a security threat.

Stating the bleeding obvious...

The guy could have said this 2-3 years ago, nothing has changed, except a funeral.

Abhisit should resign 10 years ago.

He not matter now.

He is being retained as leader so he can work with the military after the election. He is already tainted and repeating that foul deed will not affect him No one else in the party will take leadership role when the party heading towards an iceberg.

Abhisit talks from experience.

When the caretaker Yingluck government was prevented by the courts to use police to prevent anti-government protestors (endorsed by Abhisit & Suthep) from occupation of government facilities and blocking voter venues, and made powerless to use the military lacking the authority to issue an Emergency Decree, the security threats from political parties could not be countered.

When Abhisit was able to use the military (under Prayut's leadership) to fire upon and kill or injure anti-Abhisit government protestors, political security threats were abated.

So no doubt Abhisit isn't worried that the junta can handle any current political threat.

What he is worried about is not being on the backside of the junta.
