Workers succeed in pumping water out of flooded cave

With 20 smaller water pumps put inside the cave and one high-powered water pump installed outside the cave which has the capacity to pump up to 50,000 litres of water per minute, workers managed to pump water out of the underground pond three kilometres away for the first time late afternoon Wednesday.

 

Officials were optimistic that they would be able to pump out enough water in about two hours to allow Seal frog men to dive through the 100-metre flooded tunnel and to reach the so-called Pattaya Beach, a sand dune in the inner sanctum of the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non where the 13 missing footballers and coach were believed to take refuge.

 

The 20 water pumps inside the cave were supplied by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration which also provided water hoses from fire-fighting unit with a total length of about two kilometres.

Sure hope this makes a positive difference. 

Good luck to all involved here, can't imagine how the parents and relatives are feeling.

The headline doesn't seem to match the news content which follows.  Either I'm missing something obvious, or this news is either misleading/inaccurate or confusingly vague. 

 

The headline claims the success relates to pumping water out of the cave, but the news short that follows claims they have succeeded only in pumping out a pond 3 km. away, and that they hope to clear the cave enough for the divers to go in again in about two more hours--which means the cave success hasn't happened yet.  So which is it?  Where is said pond?  Is it in the cave opening, or 3 km downhill from the cave somewhere and only important in terms of allowing egress for the cave's water?

The Navy Seal's progress was stopped 3km into the cave system because of a flooded passage. I think that is the "pond" referred to.

It is certainly encouraging news. 

No doubt settled water would get clearer, but moving water not so much. It rained horrifically last night where I am about 10km away. In the mountain the clouds cling to the hillsides. In this area, actually everywhere locally rains stir up a very thick reddish brown sediment which can be seen in any water system carrying flow.

That water looks crystal clear to me.

I've been wondering why no one has come up with the bright idea of seeding the clouds to induce rainfall before they arrive at this mountain.  Don't we say in English that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?
